A tranquil place with conveniences
Just 9 miles north of Seattle, Haller Lake is a quiet, secluded community with nearby conveniences. "People move here for the neighborhood's proximity to Seattle; it's right off the I-5," says Windermere Real Estate Realtor/broker Natalee Thurston, who lives nearby and has sold 10 homes here. "It's a great area for commuters." The area is heavily wooded and streets meander throughout the neighborhood.
A home by the lake
Haller Lake has many housing options, from one-bedroom condos to million-dollar new-construction homes. The architecture features a mix of styles, like bungalows, ranch-style and new construction. "Many of the homes date back to the 1950s and come with large yards," Thurston says. Prices range from $353,000 to $1.4 million, and residences closer to Haller Lake tend to be more expensive. Two-bedroom condos list for just over $350,000, while a waterfront four-bedroom home can cost over $1.3 million. Not all homes have garages, so residents park in their driveways, on the road or elsewhere on their property. Most streets are without sidewalks.
Northgate Elementary School
Highly rated school system
The community is zoned for the highly rated Seattle Public Schools District, and students can start their education at James Baldwin Elementary, which has a B-plus score from Niche. James Addams Middle School has an A-minus rating. Ingraham High School offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and has an A Niche grade.
Fun at the lake
Haller Lake has several nearby parks for all kinds of recreation. The 20-acre Northacres Park, located just off I-5, is surrounded by woodland and contains a small forest behind the picnic area. Amenities include two ballfields, a play area, an off-leash dog space and a spray park. A winding path provides public access to the west side of Haller Lake, which locals utilize for picnics and birdwatching. Occasionally, the lake is stocked with fish, and residents are permitted to cast their reels. The Haller Lake Community Club hosts a variety of programs and events throughout the year, like Community Dance Night. The Lake City Branch of the Seattle Public Library serves the Haller Lake community. In addition to its extensive book collection, the library offers free classes, activities and events.

Aurora Avenue North is the place to be
The newly remodeled Aurora Shopping Center is a 1.5-mile drive on local streets and features national chains like Amazon Fresh, Ross, Ulta and Planet Fitness. Locals head to Aurora Avenue North for groceries, shops and dining. The Lotus Pond is known for its authentic Vietnamese dishes, and Saffron Grill serves unique Indian-Mediterranean fusion cuisine. A local favorite that's been around since 1954 is Dick's Drive-in. "They only serve hamburgers, fries, soda and milkshakes, that's it," Thurston says. "And you can't make any special requests."

Right near the I-5
Many residents commute by car, though there are public transportation options like Metro Transit, Community Transit and Sound Transit. Several bus routes also run throughout the city. A public light rail system is slated to begin operating in 2024, which will offer easy commuting options to and from Seattle for work, as well as popular events downtown. "That will really make things easier for commuters," Thurston says. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is a 21-mile drive via Interstate 5.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
