Leisure Lakes is close to lakes, parks and a quirky downtown area
Much of Leisure Lakes and its bouquet of floral-named streets are sandwiched between Lake June in Winter Scrub Preserve State Park, Jack Creek and Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife and Refuge. Like most neighborhoods outside of downtown Lake Placid, it's mostly rural and alive with Caladiums and the occasional wildlife. Lake Placid is considered "The Caladium Capital of the World" as the city has almost 1,000 acres of family-owned Caladium farms. Although Leisure Lakes offers homeowners a slower, country lifestyle compared to busier coastal towns, it isn't far from what Lake Placid offers. "Everything you really need is right off Highway 27," says Will Dibble, a Sebring resident and Broker at RE/MAX Realty Plus. "You're near the water in the countryside, and you have privacy. It's a huge draw." The artsy downtown area is 7 miles from Leisure Lakes and was named "America's Most Interesting Town," thanks partly to quirky clown cut-outs, a giant bronze bear and an assortment of murals and painted trash cans throughout. Lake Placid's location in central Florida means that Orlando, Disney World and Universal Studios, and Tampa and Clearwater to the west are close enough for a day or weekend trip.
Leisure Lakes is primarily residential, with some small businesses and restaurants.

Rural roads lead to lakefront properties
Floral-named roads like Wildflower and Gardenia Streets are incredibly rural, framed by a dense thicket mixed with towering pines. The word "lake" in its name is intentional. Five bodies of water span the neighborhood, including the 3,500-acre Lake June in Winter. Contemporary ranch homes along Beech Street and Morning Glory Drive back up to Lake June Canal and have a price range of $400,000 to $520,000. Backyards often have covered docks, patios and Florida rooms. At the same time, front lawns are clean-cut, with only a few cabbage palms accenting flowerbeds and driveways. In comparison, up to a half-acre plots of land are still covered in foliage. Like many communities on the outskirts of town, Dibble says citrus farms are now being replaced by empty residential land. Depending on the acreage and location, land can be priced between $12,000 and $30,000; however, those situated on a canal can hover around $25,000 and up to $50,000. There are clusters of established one-story homes throughout. These homes offer two to three bedrooms and 1,000 to 1,500 square feet of living space, often priced between $250,000 and $300,000. However, they rarely become available.

Living it up near Lake June Winter and Lake Istokpoga
Lakeside living is something Leisure Lake residents do best. Lake June in Winter and Lake Istokpoga – considered one of the largest lakes in the state at 30,000 acres – are 3 and 14 miles away, respectively. Both lakes have multiple public access boat ramps where residents can spend a day fishing for some of the biggest bass in Central Florida. Leisure Lakes is near numerous state parks, including the 845-acre Lake June-in-Winter Scrub Preserve and Highlands Hammock. Wildlife observation is a popular activity at Lake June in Winter, as the state park is home to bald eagles, the Florida panther and other native species. Highlands Hammock opened four years before the Florida state park system and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The 9,000-acre state park has some of the oldest oak trees in the state, rumored to be over a thousand years old. The area boasts several scenic fairways, from Lake June West Golf Course to the sprawling Placid Lakes Golf Course. The Lake Placid Local Sugar Express Train offers two to six-hour rides from Lake Placid to the expansive Lake Okeechobee. These rides are especially popular during seasonal events and festivals in Lake Placid, Sebring and Clewiston.
Many Leisure Lakes residents have backyard docks and waterway access, perfect for boating.

More local small businesses than big box retail
On Miller Avenue and within the neighborhood is Miller C Store Food, a hole-in-the-wall mini-mart with convenient necessities and two gas pumps. Henscratch Road borders Leisure Lakes to the left, which takes residents off the beaten path to multiple wineries and farms. Sugar Sand Distillery grows its own sugar cane outside the venue. Samplings of lemon vodka, apple pie moonshine and rum are paired with live music and tours of the sugar cane fields and distillery equipment. Henscratch Farms and Winery is roughly 3 miles from Sugar Sand. Chickens run rampant around the property, ushering visitors to a wide selection of fruit wines and jams at the farm's rustic store. Restaurants along the aptly named Lake June Road are Dock 633 and Jaxson's - home of the Hookiemelt: an interesting appetizer of gator or chicken covered in sour cream and wing sauce. Lake June Road then meshes with US Highway 27 and into Downtown Lake Placid, where almost all of the area's retail and restaurant scenes are located. The highway offers fast-food and chain restaurants, such as GC Grill House by Golden Corral, and major grocers at South Highlands Shopping Center, 6 miles away. Downtown neighbors the shopping center and is home to boutique stores, including The Blueberry Patch. Over 50 vibrant murals decorate businesses on Interlake Boulevard and Main Avenue, where several locally owned restaurants are situated, such as Morty & Edna's Craft Kitchen and Main Street America An Eatery. Lake Placid Farmers Market is held every Saturday morning beside Morty & Edna's on Main Avenue. While there are plenty of small businesses to support, the area needs brand-name retail options. Lakeshore Mall is the closest shopping center for department stores, but most of its retailers have closed since COVID-19. Therefore, residents might have to drive to Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales, 51 miles north, for stores like Dillard's.

Caladium Fests, Clown School and thrilling motorsports races
The three-day Caladium Festival is arguably Lake Placid's most well-known event. When July rolls around, the streets of downtown are filled with art, vintage cars, floral arrangements and festival food. Lake Placid is also home to the American Clown Museum and School and the Lake Placid Historical Society & Depot Museum. Other major attractions close to Sylvan Shores include the Sebring International Raceway, which has hosted the annual 12 Hours of Sebring WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race since 1952. USA Today has voted it North America's Number 1 Motorsports event, and it attracts visitors from all over the globe.

Getting in and around Leisure Lakes
Living in Leisure Lakes means residents are car-dependent and farther from the condensed streets of downtown Lake Placid. The main road to get out of the neighborhood is Lake June Road, which leads to US Highway 27 and grants residents access to the rest of the state. Residents must drive 140 miles to Orlando, 110 miles to Tampa or 76 miles to Fort Myers to access an airport. Immediate healthcare needs are within a 2-mile radius at AdventHealth Lake Placid. The closest Amtrak services run through the historic Sebring Station in the Sebring Downtown Historic District. Two routes are available: south to Miami or north to Orlando, Tampa and New York City.
Important things to know
While Lake Placid is not immune from Florida's hurricane season, its location in the middle of the state might not be hit as hard as coastal cities like Tampa or Fort Myers. Highlands County is in Flood Zone A and AE, especially properties along Lake Istokpoga. Certain mortgage companies may require homeowners to acquire flood insurance. Extreme wind is also a concern for some residences near the waterfront. Additionally, the citrus industry has been severely impacted by Greening. This bacterial infection can kill a citrus tree within a few years. There is currently no cure. "Our citrus industry isn't what it once was," Dibble says.
Scenic views and local wildlife can be seen around Leisure Lakes.
