Popular yet quiet suburb near essentials

Redstone is an up-and-coming suburb that's growing popular with newcomers to Mobile. "When people are moving to the area but don't want to pay the city prices in Mobile, they look here for less expensive homes," says Jeff Jones, the No. 1 Realtor with Keller Williams Mobile for 2021 and 2022. "People get more breathing room here but still have a short drive to all their amenities." The partially rural landscape gives residents a slower pace of life, but they drive just a few miles away for a growing number of shopping and dining options in downtown Semmes. Even students enjoy the convenience of Redstone, with the entire school pipeline within 5 miles of the neighborhood. Just 17 miles from Mobile, people get these convenient amenities with a laid-back suburban atmosphere and lower home prices.

Catching a break from Mobile prices

The area is a mixture of open rural fields and a handful of small, densely wooded communities where ample tree cover and spacious lawns give homes a secluded feel without being too out of the way. The privacy and lower prices compared to Mobile have made the area increasingly popular. Most homes range from $225,000 for a three-bedroom 1970s ranch-style to about $300,000 for a four-bedroom 1980s prairie-style with a front porch made for catching the breeze in a rocking chair on a sweltering summer day in Alabama. If lower prices are not the aim, drive deeper into the woods to find a stately 5,000-square-foot Queen Anne manor with dramatically pitched roof lines and ornately crafted gables on a 33-acre estate with a large pond for over $1.3 million.

Pre-med at Mary G. Montgomery High

Students may attend Mobile County Schools, beginning at Allentown Elementary in the neighborhood's west end, graded a B by Niche. They continue just 5 miles north at Semmes Middle School, rated a C, and finish down the street at Mary G. Montgomery High, rated a C-plus. Before students begin at Montgomery, they attend Sink or Swim. This annual tradition prepares them for life as a Montgomery Viking by learning about school traditions and meeting staff members. The school also has the only nationally recognized pre-med program in southwest Alabama.

Semmes House of Pizza and other essentials

"Semmes downtown is developing into a cool area with lots of good restaurants to choose from," Jones says. "Semmes House of Pizza is one of the best in the area, and it's only a couple miles from the neighborhood." People like to catch their morning buzz at Yellowhammer Coffee, a local chain with two locations within 5 miles of the neighborhood. To check off their grocery list, folks drive 3 miles north to Winn-Dixie or 5 miles east to Walmart for big-box items. Around Walmart, find a selection of smaller retailers and fast-casual restaurants. For more local eats, folks grab a plate of barbeque at the Hickory Pit Too across from Winn-Dixie.

Nature walks on Viking Trail

Folks drive 5 miles north to practice and play on Semmes Community Park's baseball and football fields. There's also a playground for kids to climb on a shaded picnic area to escape the Alabama sunshine. Next to the park, people enjoy walking and running on the Viking Trail, a wooded off-road path befittingly named after the Montgomery High Vikings, whose campus neighbors the park. For community gatherings and celebrations, folks head to the Semmes Community Center at the park.
