Sticking true to its name, Scenic Hill is a scenic neighborhood, surrounded by forests, farms and recreational opportunities like Big Creek Lake and Semmes Municipal Park. Neither suburban nor rural, residents of Scenic Hill enjoy the amenities and friendliness of a small town but also the roominess and tranquility of the countryside. “It’s got a few hundred houses. It’s a good, solid neighborhood if you want to live out west of Mobile,” says Bill Hinton, Associate Broker with Roberts Brothers who has been selling homes in the area for 36 years. In particular, he singles out the spaciousness of parcels. “The lots are half an acre, and home sizes run typically from 1,300 to 2,200 square feet.” Ranch-style homes tend to sell between $200,000 and $350,000.

Architectural styles differ across subdivisions, though homebuyers can expect to see spacious lawns across the board. Pecan Pointe offers beige, brick American Craftsman homes with sidewalks and attached garages, while the homes of Joy Wood show French Colonial influence, with steeply sloped roofs. Youngstowne Hill offers larger American Craftsman homes, albeit without sidewalks. In Roseland Heights, homebuyers will find an eclectic mix of ranch-style homes, bungalows, Cape Cod homes and more. Home prices usually range between $200,000 and $350,000. Lots tend to be half an acre or larger, running up to 2 or more.
From elementary school to career training
Scenic Hill students can attend Allentown Elementary, which receives a B from Niche; Semmes Middle, which receives a C; and Mary G. Montgomery High, which receives a C-plus. Montgomery High students can take courses at Faulkner Career Tech Center starting in 10th grade and earn varying amounts of college credit. This off-campus learning takes place during two blocks of the school day, so students should keep in mind they will have to plan their schedules accordingly to complete their required high school classes. For hands-on education, parents and teachers can bring kids to Linda’s Learning Farm, where visitors can milk cows, care for freshly laid eggs and learn all about farms and animals.
The absence of bustling highways keeps the neighborhood scenic
No interstates or major highways pass through Scenic Hill, though US Route 98, or Moffett Road, is about 5 minutes north. Snow Road North and Howells Ferry Road are the main north-south and east-west thoroughfares, respectively. Mobile Regional Airport is southeast of Scenic Hill, about a 10-minute drive away. Downtown Mobile is about 30 minutes east by car.
Eating out and shopping in Semmes
Residents will find some eating options in downtown Semmes. Locals can start off the day right at Yellowhammer Coffee, a Mobile chain. House of Pizza is the go-to spot for delicious New York-style pizza. Pies vary in size, going all the way up to 28 inches in diameter. And customers shouldn’t think that pizza is all they’re good for, with residents adoring the fried green beans and fried pickles as much as the pies. When locals are craving tasty barbecue, Hickory Pit Too can’t be beat, known for their Boss Hawg, 20 ounces of hamburger and 6 ounces of pulled pork served on a plate-sized bun and decked with various toppings. Residents can fulfill their shopping needs at the Winn-Dixie right downtown. Other shops like Dollar General can be found up Moffett Road.
Catching fish and cooling off
Big Creek Lake spans some 3,600 acres and is Mobile’s biggest source of freshwater. The reservoir is available for boating, which might be easiest for residents from Fox Landing, a boat ramp found at the western end of Howells Ferry Road. Anglers can expect to encounter bass, crappies, bluegills and more. They can also spend a day fishing on the pond at Semmes Municipal Park, while children can get wet and flop around like fish at the park’s splash pad. The park also features a playground, pavilions and a disc golf course created by renowned designer John Houck.
Scenic Hill residents love community events
“We have the annual Camellia Show every January at Semmes Heritage Park,” says Elizabeth Lovelady, Events Coordinator and Deputy City Clerk for the City of Semmes. At the Camellia Festival, visitors can admire the camellia displays, attend lectures on the flower or buy some of their own. “Anytime we do anything, hold any kind of event, the entire community shows up and comes together.”
