Sharon: "somewhere to raise chickens"
Sharon began as a railroad town in the 1880s, but when the railroad pulled out, most development moved 20 miles east to Rock Hill, leaving Sharon as a small rural community. The town sits 40 miles from Charlotte and is growing in popularity for commuting workers or anyone looking for a small-town life. “When people move out that way, 25 minutes from any real grocery store, there’s a reason,” says Danielle Childers, the Broker/Owner of Homeland Realty Group, who specializes in York County. “They want an authentic small-town feel, a more affordable living cost, or fewer restrictions — I hear all the time: Find me somewhere I can raise chickens.” For some, that authentic small-town lifestyle is worth the lack of direct access to big city amenities like large hospitals, airports and shopping malls.
Large lots and private roads
Most houses in Sharon range from $200,000 to $300,000 for ranch-style and craftsman homes. Near the heart of the town, homes on main roads have sidewalks and white picket fences bordering front lawns. Smaller roads leading away from the town center are populated with homes offering a more rural feel and 5-acre lots. Many of these homes are set back from the road for privacy or include personal unpaved roads. In the outlying areas, luxury homes with paved private roads, fishing ponds, and over 10 acres get up to $1 million or more.
Sharon homes are mostly centrally located around the downtown area.
Older one story ranches can be found along the streets of Sharon.
Some newer neighborhoods sit on moderate lots and have large floorplans.

Small-town elementary school
Kids in Sharon start their education at Hickory Grove-Sharon Elementary School, which receives a B rating from Niche. “The school has a really loving environment,” says Childers, who grew up in the area. “You know all the teachers personally, and if parents want to stop by and visit their kid in class, they are welcome to.” Then, kids hop on a 7-mile bus ride over to York Middle School and York Comprehensive High School, which both receive a B-minus rating. High schoolers can study specialized fields like agriculture, engineering and auto mechanics at the attached Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center. The high school also offers dual enrollment courses with York Technical College.

Homestyle cooking and hands-on pottery classes
Sharon Grill is the cornerstone of the community and has served the town for over 40 years. The restaurant offers comforting southern food, all made in-house, and has holiday specials where kids eat for free. Scoops Ice Cream is a favorite for a sweet treat, and a nearby Dollar General is the place to go for essentials. The newest addition to the town is the Spinning Out Pottery Studio, which offers pottery-making classes and a small gift shop. For bigger box stores like Walmart and Food Lion, residents head 7 miles to York.

Community in Sharon
Sharon’s biggest event is held on the first Friday of December to kick off the holiday season. Lights and street vendors line the roads, and residents take rides in horse-drawn carriages. The old Hill Mercantile is also a significant part of the community; its bustling storefront put Sharon on the map back in the early 1900s. The Mercantile isn’t in use today, but plans are in the works to turn it into an events center.
Get outside at local parks
Sharon Park is located at the heart of town and offers a tennis and basketball court, as well as some play structures for the kids. The JB Comber Baseball Field is ideal for community games, with a baseball diamond lined by bleachers. And the smaller Rainey Park has lighted walking trails for use at any time of the day.
Harmon-Harris Park is right next to the Sharon FD building in teh center of town.
Local Sharon Boy Scouts created this memorial for the Sharon FD.

GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
