Small community 3 miles from Shasta Lake
Folks traveling north from Redding might know Mountain Gate as the last stop before Shasta Lake. "It's the gateway from the valley into the mountains," says Realtor Richard Howe with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, who's lived in Redding since the 1970s. This small community rests along Interstate 5, just 3 miles south of the lake's mountainous shores. "There isn't much to it, other than that you're 5 minutes from the lake," says Howe. "I've been driving through there for decades to help out at marinas on the lake, and it's always been just a few roads of homes." The neighborhood doesn't have sprawling developments or much commercial activity, but that's why residents enjoy it. They can find a home quietly tucked away in the forest just a few miles from the lake.
Fishing and boating on Shasta Lake
Shasta Lake is one of Northern California's most popular outdoor destinations, and Mountain Gate residents are just 3 miles away. "Shasta doesn't have sandy beaches because it's a mountain lake," says Howe. "It's got absolutely gorgeous hiking trails and caverns, and it's a great fishing lake." Boaters and fishermen can launch from the Bridge Bay Hotel's marina, about 3 miles north of the neighborhood. Turntable Bay Road, 5 miles north across the lake, is a gravel road with walking trails leading down to the water. This offers lake views for folks who are driving or hiking. The Waters Gulch Trailhead is the closest starting point for a more immersive trek, about 10 miles away. It takes hikers through the densely wooded mountains, across trickling creeks and ends at the shorefront.

There are some larger homes to the east of the interstate — spacious ranch-style homes and cabins tucked deep into the woods on secluded multiacre lots, and a few large new homes developed closer to the interstate on open grassy lots. These homes range from $600,000 to $750,000.

Wildfires in Shasta County
Wildfires are common in Shasta County, as its seemingly endless forests and summer temperatures averaging around 100 degrees make them difficult to contain. The 2018 Carr Fire got dangerously close to Mountain Gate, burning hundreds of homes a few miles away in northwest Redding. While the neighborhood wasn't burned, the air was clouded with smoke, causing many residents to evacuate. Residents should have an evacuation plan prepared in anticipation of these disasters. Local fire authorities also encourage residents to create a defensible space around their homes by removing flammable brush and materials, especially in heavily wooded areas like Mountain Gate.
