Most Shawnee homes were built during the post-war building boom, and ranch-style and split-level homes are common. Many have attached, front-facing garages at the end of private driveways. “You have more of the older homes in the eastern part, and the western part of town has newer subdivisions,” says Lisa Miller, a realtor and associate broker with Lynch Real Estate.
The median list price is around $410,000, which is on par with the national median. “It’s one of the most affordable areas in Johnson County,” Miller says. “You have everything you need right here, and it’s close to everything.”

The Shawnee Mission School District serves almost 27,000 children, making it the third-largest district in Kansas. Home to Shawnee Mission Park, state’s most visited park
Shawnee is home to nearly two dozen parks spread throughout the city. The largest and best-known of these is Shawnee Mission Park, the largest recreation area in Johnson County and the most visited park in Kansas. Located mainly in Shawnee with some crossover into Lenexa, Shawnee Mission Park sprawls over 1,600 acres and includes a lake, an expansive dog off-leash area, an archery range and a disc golf course. Old Shawnee Days kicks off summer
Old Shawnee Days is one of the city’s largest events and is held every June. The weekend festival includes carnival rides, a parade and live music. The free monthly Moonlight Market in downtown Shawnee hosts a farmers market, craft vendors, and live music from May through November.
The Shawnee Town 1929 Museum, an open-air replica of 1929 farm life, hosts special events like “In Their Footsteps: A Veterans Day Lantern Tour,” a living history event showcasing the effects World War I had on Shawnee. The event won a National Award of Excellence from the American Association for State and Local History, the top recognition for achievement in preserving and interpreting local and state history.
With rides galore, Old Shawnee Days will have Shawnee locals on the edge of their seats.
