About Sherwood, OR

Family-focused community in Oregon wine country

Believed to have been named after the forest where Robin Hood and his Merry Men sought refuge, the city of Sherwood is a family oriented city of almost 20,000 in Oregon's wine country. Between community events like the Robin Hood Festival, highly rated schools and expansive green spaces, Sherwood is certainly accommodating. Though its nostalgic “Old Town” is surrounded by sprawling suburbs, it’s still close enough to Portland to catch a show or a game. The manufacturing and construction industries constitute a considerable part of Sherwood’s economy. Companies that perform fabricated metal product or machinery manufacturing have the highest combined payroll amounts in the city.

History and art in Old Town

Antique and specialty shops along railroad tracks in Sherwood’s historic “Old Town” hearken back to the olden days. “We’ve got a Main Street America vibe in our downtown area, with retail, restaurants and wine bars that are popular hangouts for a lot of people,” says Corey Kearsley, the interim executive director of the Sherwood Chamber of Commerce. Across the tracks, the Sherwood Center for the Arts offers a variety of visual and performing arts programming to the community. Outside of downtown Sherwood’s local businesses, residents have a variety of big-box retail options, including Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Target and Kohl’s.

Robin Hood Festival in Sherwood

Every July, the community celebrates its name with an old-fashioned parade—complete with characters from the folk tale—live music, performances, food vendors and a market. “You can’t have a city named Sherwood and not have a Robin Hood Festival,” says Kearsley. About a month before the festival, the city’s Chamber of Commerce closes downtown for the Cruisin’ Sherwood classic car show. “Four hundred—give or take—classic cars roll in, and around 20,000 people come to look at them and talk to the owners,” says Kearsley.

A strong start at Sherwood schools

The Sherwood School District receives an overall A grade from Niche, which also ranks it as the No. 1 school district in the county and the fourth-best district in the entire state. The site also scores the district with an A grade for its academics, teachers and college prep programming. Sherwood High School, which earns an A-minus, has a higher graduation rate than the state average, and 70% of its students enrolled in a two- or four-year college within 16 months of graduating, compared to a 56% statewide average.

More than 200 river bird species

The Tualatin River Wildlife Refuge is the largest urban wildlife refuge in the Portland metro area and one of only a few in the country. Hikers may spot rough-skinned orange newts—one of the most poisonous animals known to scientists—on its many trails. The refuge is also home to over 200 species of birds, including great blue herons, red-tailed hawks and bald eagles, making it a prime setting for the Tualatin River Bird Festival every May. Sherwood also has several smaller green spaces, like Snyder Park and its baseball field, tennis courts, basketball court, full-sized turf soccer field and dog park. The city also hosts Movies in the Park and Music in the Park, both at Stella Olsen Memorial Park.

Pacific Highway West connects to Portland

Pacific Highway West, also referred to as Highway 99W, runs diagonally across the entirety of Sherwood, slightly north of its downtown. As the route continues northeast, it travels alongside Interstate 5, which commuters can also use to reach downtown Portland, about 18 miles away. TriMet provides daily bus service from Sherwood to the Tigard Transit Center, where commuters can catch the Westside Express Service (WES) Commuter Rail to Beaverton.

Decreasing property crime echoes state-wide rates

Property crime in Sherwood is decreasing at a similar rate to that of the entire state. As of September 2024, there were 360 reports of property crime. During the same period of the previous year, there were 466 reports, good for a 22.75% decrease between the two years. State-wide data showed a 21.81% decrease. Conversely, violent crimes in the city rose from the first nine months of 2023 when compared to 2024. From January to September 2024, there were 43 reports of violent crime, compared to 34 the previous year, indicating a spike of 26.5%. However, violent crime made up only 5% of total crime reports in Sherwood in 2023. Sherwood enjoys a moderate climate, with summer highs that stay in the low 80s and average winter lows in the mid-30s that rarely dip below freezing. Like the rest of the Portland metro area, Sherwood receives a generous amount of rain, with November, December and January being the wettest months.
