Just 6 miles from Downtown Shreveport, the Country Club Hills-Lakeshore neighborhood stretches from the runways of the airport to the shores of Lake Cross. One of the area’s cultural landmarks, the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, was built on the edges of this and other working-class neighborhoods so that art and history would be available to everyone. Consistent with that something-for-everyone notion, you can find both investment and starter homes here, as well as newer, larger homes near the lakefront. The interior part of the area is poised for revitalization, and the whole area is within quick reach of shopping and entertainment. This diverse neighborhood is bordered by Interstates 20 and 220 and has Highway 79 running east to west through it, making commuting and errand-running a breeze.

The neighborhood itself is a mix of mature trees, waterfront houses, rentals and some properties in need of major renovations. Residences sit on large lots varying from one-quarter to over one-half acre, which leaves room for small gardens or flourishing flower beds. Most of the houses were built in the 1950s or 1970s, and the different decades’ designs are easy to spot. Many of the homes from the ‘50s are wooden and built on pillar, post or pier foundations, while houses from the ‘70s are brick and built on slabs. Passing through the community, you’ll spot ranch-styles, cottages, and craftsman bungalows as well as French Country and large side-gabled roof homes. When houses enter the market, they typically sell within 90 days. Prices here range from $45,000 for an investment property to $150,000 for a starter home. New custom constructions near the waterfront can run as much as $350,000.

The Country Club Hills-Lakeshore area is served by one of the largest school districts in Louisiana. The Caddo Parish Public Schools district oversees nearly 60 facilities, 12 of which are National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. The youngest scholars in the the neighborhood can attend Judson Fundamental Magnet Elementary. This selective institution takes applications in October and November for spring admission. It’s received a B grade from Niche.com and hosts clubs like honor choir, STEM club, and 4H.

The Louisiana State Exhibit Museum can seem imposing at first, but as you draw closer, original artworks such as a huge Conrad Albrizio fresco beckon you to enter. Completed in 1939 as part of a New Deal Works Project, the facility is home to 23 scale dioramas depicting events from Louisiana history. The one-story Albrizio fresco depicts life in North and South Louisiana during the 1930s and ‘40s while a topographical map of the state lies three feet below the lobby floor and shows the cultural landscapes of the bayou state. It’s also home to one of the most extensive Native American artifacts collections in the United States and displays a 1,000-year-old Caddo culture log boat.

The neighborhood also has a small green space called Atkins Park. People come here to enjoy the jogging and biking path, as well as the baseball and softball field. You can rest on one of the conveniently placed benches and listen to the sounds of basketballs bouncing across the nearby court. Open daily, the park also has a playground for children and picnic areas for when you’re ready to quiet a growling stomach. A small library completes the scene and invites you to take advantage of a quiet day to simply sit and read, while being surrounded by nature.

The actual country club that lends its name to this area is no longer in operation, and while plans were approved several years back for a new mixed-use development in its place, those efforts have yet to materialize. Nevertheless, the Country Club Hills-Lakeshore neighborhood can get you where you’d like to go, whether that’s on its major roadways or in one of its unique starter homes.
