Quiet, family-oriented suburb of Reading zoned to top-notch Wilson Schools
Well into the suburbs of Reading, West Wyomissing is cradled in the curve of U.S. Route 222 where it connects to U.S. Route 422. But despite the bustle of close-by highways, this is a quiet, family-oriented suburb, less than 3 miles away from the vibrant shopping and dining district of West Reading. “It’s a great neighborhood for young families,” says Matt Wolf, a Reading area native and team lead of the Re/Max of Reading Matt Wolf Team. “It’s in a pretty desirable school district, and there’s a lot of two- or three-bedroom homes that are reasonably priced.” The Wilson School District is well-regarded locally for both its academics and athletics, and Niche ranks it as the No. 2 best school district in Berks County. Community parks, a popular baseball field and sidewalk-lined streets all make West Wyomissing a place where parents settle down to raise their kids.

Competitively priced brick cottages and ranch-style homes
Classic postwar home styles line the streets of West Wyomissing, framed by sidewalks and mature foliage. Brick cottages, ranch-style homes and Cape Cods from the 1960s are popular here, alongside some later split-level homes and semi-detached townhouses. Local Realtors such as Wolf describe the area’s home prices as slightly above average for Berks County but still within a competitive range. While some two-bedroom homes can be priced as low as $170,000, three-beds with recent renovations can be priced around $350,000.

Kids attend sought-after Wilson High School
The public school district is a major draw in this neighborhood. “West Wyomissing is in the Wilson School District, which is very big and very well-ranked,” Wolf says. “People here are very loyal to their schools, and you’ll see lots of families buying houses in this neighborhood because they want their kids to attend the same high school they went to.” Spring Ridge Elementary earns a B-plus from Niche and sends students on to the B-rated Wilson Southern Middle. Wilson High School scores an A-minus and is ranked by Niche as the No. 2 best public high school in Berks County. “Wilson High offers so much versatility,” says Krista Templin, a Realtor with eXp Realty who lives in the area, “My sons went there, and every year during enrollment they’d get a whole booklet to select classes – just like college!” Among the school’s robust course offerings are five academies with focused pathways that span fields such as biomedicine, international relations and performing arts. Templin adds: “They have great sports, too, and that’s where a lot of people find community. The first Wilson football game I went to absolutely blew me away. Everyone comes out to the football games, even if they don’t have kids in the school.”

Amateur baseball at Owls Field and playdates at Red Caboose Park
Tucked between rows of homes is Red Caboose Park, a community park lovingly named for the old train car where kids play pretend as conductors. Situated at the bottom of a gentle slope, trees surround the well-maintained amenities that include a playground, a softball field and a pavilion. Next to the basketball courts is Owls Field, a sweeping diamond where the Owls American Legion Senior and Youth amateur baseball teams play. “People come out in the summertime with their lawn chairs to watch the games,” Wolf says, noting the field’s unique terraced grass viewing areas where people put their picnic blankets and chairs. Further east along Garfield Avenue are even more basketball courts and grassy fields at West Wyomissing Park, the site of the former West Wyomissing Elementary. “Even though the old elementary school had to be closed, they donated the land and left the playground and sports fields as a community park,” Wolf says.

Gas stations, banks and postal stores are among the other nearby amenities. Restaurants are north along U.S. Route 422, alongside everyday services such as insurance agencies, nail salons and convenience stores. Lilli’s Ranch House & Creamery is one family-owned mainstay known for its hearty breakfast platters and distinctive Wild West atmosphere. “New York Bagelry is also extremely popular. My boys always go there before they head out for golf,” Templin says. “Another big Wilson High hangout is P.J. Welihan’s Pub and Restaurant. My kids still go on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to see all their buddies from Wilson.” For a night out, most people head 3 miles east into West Reading, where breweries and boutiques line Penn Avenue.
