A historic neighborhood overlooking downtown Sioux Falls
In the late 1800s, Sioux Falls’s wealthiest and most influential citizens built palatial estates atop a hill just west of downtown. Overlooking downtown Sioux Falls and the Big Sioux River valley, this neighborhood would represent and celebrate Sioux Falls’s place as an economic powerhouse on the American frontier as the city’s population increased nearly fivefold in the 1880s. It was one of the first neighborhoods to bring trees to the South Dakota prairie, a fact that serves its modern residents as they enjoy the shade of the city’s most mature trees. Today, is a hub for historic architecture enthusiasts looking for an elegant estate overlooking the city that’s a short walk away from downtown.

Shopping and dining in downtown Sioux Falls
For shopping and dining, most head two blocks east to downtown Sioux Falls. “Downtown Sioux Falls has anything you could want,” says South Dakota State Representative Kadyn Wittman. “We have incredible restaurants – sushi, Italian, Cambodian. It’s hard to pick a favorite because we have so many options.” For breakfast, she recommends picking up a pastry from World Pastry Team Champion and Top Chef winner Chris Hanmer’s bakery, CH Patisserie; for lunch, Roots of Brasil – a newer Brazilian restaurant on the east side of downtown; and for dinner, a locally sourced meal in M.B. Haskett’s intimate dining room. For drinks, she recommends a tiki bar called The Hello Hi or The Treasury, a cocktail bar in an old bank vault. Residents can pick up essentials at the Family Dollar on 8th Street and do additional shopping downtown at 8th & Railroad Center, which houses local businesses like a cookware store and an apothecary. The nearest supermarket is Sunshine Foods on 2nd Avenue, but residents can find specialty groceries closer to home at Global Foods Grocery, La Tapatia Mexican Store & Restaurant and Sheger Addis Ethiopian Grocery Store.

Late 1800s Queen Anne homes
Most homes in Cathedral were built just after the population boom of the 1880s, so the Queen Anne style of the 1890s is the most common architecture. Designed to flaunt the wealth of Sioux Falls’s growing upper class, the neighborhood’s homes feature ornate exterior detailing like towers, turrets and wraparound porches complimented by leaded and stained-glass windows. Interiors are often adorned by intricately carved woodwork for built-in bookshelves, stairs and fireplaces. In the mid-20th century, a shortage of military housing in Sioux Falls caused some of the neighborhood’s homes to be repurposed into multiunit properties, but most have since been converted back to single-family homes. Sioux Falls has several ordinances in place to preserve the character of its historic districts, including the standard that historic features should be repaired rather than replaced and that any increase in home value due to historic rehabilitation falls under an eight-year state property tax moratorium. Most homes in Cathedral cost between $200,000 and $300,000.
