Sioux Falls’s oldest park crowns the city’s most sought-after neighborhood
Strolling through McKennan Park can inspire dreams and memories of times past: the whimsy of childhood, the romance of marriage, the joy of starting a family. People from all over Sioux Falls come to the city’s oldest park to enjoy its colorful gardens and the shade of its towering trees. On weekends, those who are lucky enough to live in the neighborhood, load up their wagons with picnic baskets, pop the kids in their strollers and get ready to spend the entire day outside. “Everybody wants to live close to the park,” says local Realtor Andy Kontz. Resident Allison Crawford believes the neighborhood’s charm makes it suitable for raising a family, “We love the tree-lined streets, sidewalks, great neighbors and smaller-scale vintage houses. It all works together to build a beautiful sense of community,” she says. “Everyone keeps an eye out for one another and pitches in when help is needed. My dad grew up in the neighborhood, and now my children are growing up here. It’s a great place to raise kids.”

A charming mix of single-family homes
McKennan Park has a charming mix of early to mid-20th-century single-family houses, ranging from Tudors to Colonial Revivals and ranch-styles – all of which sit back on sizeable yards lined with sidewalks and mature trees. The neighborhood’s smooth paved streets make it nice for biking or taking walks, and its eclectic array of architecture provides engaging scenery. “We love McKennan Park for its vintage architectural styles,” Crawford says. “There are also a lot of old-growth trees in the area. The oldest and largest black walnut and beech trees in the state of South Dakota are down the street. A lot of beautiful history can be found here.” Most homes in the neighborhood cost between $300,000 and $500,000, but some exceed that – these are typically historic homes that have been meticulously maintained and expanded.

Unwind in the city’s oldest park
Meticulously landscaped and donned with statues and colorful gardens, McKennan Park exudes an air of earned esteem as Sioux Falls’s oldest park. “We love to walk our dog around McKennan Park,” Crawford says. “It’s fun to see how people are enjoying the park, whether it’s splashing at the pool, playing tennis, swinging on the playground equipment, having a wedding in the sunken garden, picnicking, and more! It’s also fun to see the different architectural styles, gardening techniques, and run into old friends and make new ones as we’re walking.” Downtown resident Joe Kirby visits McKennan Park with his wife when he wants to unwind: “We just walk through it and enjoy the beauty,” he says.

Dining along Minnesota Avenue
Minnesota Avenue has lots of different dining options: from fast-food chains like Domino’s and Slim Chickens to the local Azteca Mexican Restaurant and Boss’ Pizza & Chicken. “Our favorite restaurant is Bagel Boy,” Crawford says. “It’s owned by friends who live in McKennan Park. A lot of people who work there live in the area, and it’s got great food!” Most shop for groceries at the Sioux Falls Food Co+op, a cooperatively owned grocery store focused on sourcing local products. Three miles southwest, Western Mall houses major retailers like Best Buy as well as chain restaurants and a movie theater. Down the road from Western Mall, the frugal stock up on groceries and other goods at Costco.

Downtown is a mile away. It takes five minutes driving, 10 minutes biking or 30 minutes walking to get there – and many opt for the latter. “Everybody goes up Phillips Avenue to downtown,” Kontz says. “It’s only eight blocks to downtown, so it’s a very favorable location within walking distance.” The closest bus routes get passengers there in about 30 minutes, the same amount of time as walking. McKennan Park sits between Avera McKennan Hospital and Sanford USD Medical Center – two of the state’s top employers – and the Sioux Falls Regional Airport is 4 miles away.
