A rustic township in northwestern Butler County

In the northwestern corner of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area, Worth Township offers quiet, country living between the rolling hills and expansive farmland of Butler County. The township spans about 25 square miles, and less than 1,500 people live among the sprawling nature preserves, campgrounds and state parks that define its verdant landscapes. While the community embraces a slower pace of life, it’s bordered by the lively college town of Slippery Rock. “People buy in this area for their kids. The school system and university set the township apart from other areas nearby," says Megan Caldarelli, a Realtor with ERA Richmond Real Estate Service and former resident of Worth Township. Students are zoned to attend the highly rated Slippery Rock Area School District, which Niche ranks as the fourth-best school district in Butler County. The township straddles a 5-mile stretch of Interstate 79, which offers access to the rest of the Pittsburgh Metro Area and beyond.

An eclectic mix of custom-built homes with spacious lots

The township features a wide variety of architectural styles, and no two houses look the same. Homebuyers will find everything from sprawling Cape Cod and ranch-style homes to custom-built log cabins that invoke the spirit of the Adirondacks. More recent construction includes New Traditional estates built from the 2000s through the early 2020s. The township is sparsely populated, and properties offer residents plenty of privacy with tree-lined lots averaging over an acre and a half. Prices typically range from $200,000 for an older ranch-style home to $450,000 for a custom-built estate, but outliers can fetch upwards of $900,000. Those looking to build their own houses will find lots selling for $40,000 to $70,000, depending on their acreage. This quiet township has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Swimming, fishing and hiking at Moraine State Park

Moraine State Park stretches into the southeastern corner of the township and boasts over two million visitors each year, making it the most popular attraction in Butler County. The park surrounds the 3,225-acre Lake Arthur, where water activities include kayaking, canoeing and swimming along two sandy beaches. The lake is also a warmwater fishery where anglers frequently reel in largemouth bass and channel catfish. Back on land, there are nearly 30 miles of hiking trails, 20 miles of horseback riding trails and six miles of mountain biking trails that wind through mature forests and grassy fields. The state park also allows hunting during established seasons, with native game including deer, pheasants and waterfowl. There are also several nature preserves in Worth Township, including the Miller Esker Natural Area and Glacier Wetlands Natural Area. While they do not have designated trails, the nature preserves help protect the township’s rural character and are available for wildlife observation. Slippery Rock Creek winds through the northern half of the township, and several tributaries of the creek meander through the rest of the community. “Slippery Rock Creek is always full of fly fishers and whitewater boaters. It’s a great place to bring kids,” Caldarelli says. The creek borders the Slippery Rock Campground, a members-only campground with athletic facilities, an outdoor pool and year-round events.

Festivities at Cooper’s Lake include the Pennsic War

There are year-round festivities at Cooper’s Lake, a private event venue and campground in the southwestern corner of Worth Township. It’s a popular spot for reenactment and LARP events, and each summer, the Pennsic War transforms the campground into a medieval society. The festival is one of the largest roleplaying events in the world and brings over 10,000 people to western Pennsylvania for two weeks of staged battles, performances and classes on medieval topics.

I-79 provides access to the rest of western Pennsylvania

Worth Township lacks public transportation, and its rural landscapes mean that residents are largely car-dependent. I-79 bisects the township and is the primary north-south thoroughfare in western Pennsylvania. The interstate leads about 45 miles south to Downtown Pittsburgh, while Pittsburgh International Airport is about a 56-mile drive away.
