Storied riverfront suburb of Fall River
Somerset Historic Village, often called “the Village” by locals, rests against the shores of the Taunton River just north of where it meets Mount Hope Bay. This centuries-old town center is where many of the area’s riverfront amenities are, and where history lives on in the neighborhood homes. “My husband and I used to live down there, in the Village,” says Melanie Bissonnette, a Somerset resident and Realtor with Riverside Realty. “We’re actually both involved in the Somerset Historical Society. Somerset is very, very old, and there’s a lot of history in the Village.” Over the years, the town found success in shipbuilding, pottery works and, eventually, as a humble suburb of its neighboring city, Fall River. “People move there for the location on the Taunton River and the proximity to Fall River, which is very historic and has things to do,” says Katie Elderkin, a Realtor with Keller Williams South Watuppa. “There are a lot of old homes, some of them on the waterfront.”

Historic homes and Taunton River views
Charming New England cottages, shingle-style homes and Colonial Revivals are all common here, as are ranch-style homes and some extra-large houses with personal docks on the Taunton River. A majority of properties are from the mid-20th century through the early 2000s, but Somerset Historic Village still lives up to its name with some homes built as far back as 1860. Although the narrow, tightly-packed streets of this neighborhood might conjure images of urban living, homes in this suburban neighborhood are equipped with generous backyards, buffers of mature trees and enough lawn space for some front yard landscaping of bushes and flowerbeds. “Some areas where the houses are very close together, I think you get a stronger sense of community,” Bissonnette says. “Those people know their neighbors.” While homes in need of renovations can list for $250,000, prices can climb north of $850,000 for spacious riverfront homes. And, while the majority of properties in Somerset Historic Village are single-family homes, the occasional duplex or triplex does sometimes list for sale. These are typically priced from $450,000 to $750,000.

Spots to swim or dock a boat at Village Waterfront Park
Village Waterfront Park sits on the waters of the Taunton River, comprising a small, sandy beach, a pier, a boat ramp and a couple of spots to dock a boat. Off to the side, there’s a pirate ship-themed playground. Although a humble park, it’s one of the most popular in Somerset — and it’s almost unrecognizable during the annual Spirit of Somerset festival. The parking lot is transformed by food and artisan vendors, with a large stage for performances from local artists and the high school band. Boat rides ferry residents around the river, and the day is capped off with a fireworks show over the water. The event is the park’s busiest day of the year, but throughout the summer families and fishermen flock to the waterfront. There’s a slightly larger shore at Pierce Beach, which also features a 90-foot red slide and a playground. Marinas dot the riverfront, including Somerset Marina & Yacht Sales. “There’s a nice community around the Somerset Marina,” Bissonnette says. “We keep our boat there.”

New England fare at Somerset Grille
A handful of restaurants and take-out pizzerias flank County Street just south of the neighborhood. Somerset Grille is one of these longstanding establishments, known for its New England-style seafood including clam cakes and chowder. Continuing south towards U.S. Highway 6, there are dining options, such as the homestyle breakfast staple Cindy’s and relative newcomer Society Coffee Bar. “Society is locally owned, though they have a couple of locations,” Elderkin says. “It’s pretty cool because it’s a café in the morning, and then in the evening they do cocktails and community events.” About 3 miles outside of the neighborhood, Auclair’s Market is Somerset’s local grocer, while big-box stores like Stop & Shop and the Home Depot are a couple of miles farther. More shopping and dining can be found on the opposite side of the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Fall River.

Peruse the past at the Somerset Historical Society
The Somerset Historical Society preserves the village’s long history, which dates back to 1677. This small but mighty museum features exhibits on the town’s indigenous inhabitants, old homesteading tools and remnants from Somerset’s once-prolific handmade ceramics industry. More than just a catalog of the past, the local museum also hosts a year-round flea market on the first and third Saturdays of each month. “At Christmastime, we’d have a Christmas party where Santa would come to visit the kids and do cookie-making,” Bissonnette says.

Somerset Historic Village’s Old Lady of Peace Church also features a Christmas Bazaar event.
