Dating back to the mid-17th century, Glastonbury and Rocky Hill are some of the oldest colonial towns in Connecticut. The homes here, and their residents, are a part of that history. Early settlers like Thomas Treat and John Hollister lived in what has now been designated the Rocky Hill Ferry Historic District, establishing the community as an agricultural and maritime hub. Scores of ships once sailed down and across the Connecticut River, taking passengers far and wide. As more homes were constructed, the community changed, but it still retains much of its history and pastoral beauty: Farms still dominate much of the landscape, and an historic ferry continues to run, while established homes stand proud. “It’s a really pretty neighborhood,” says Realtor Dawn Satagaj, who has been selling houses in the area with William Raveis Real Estate for 31 years and has lived in neighboring Rocky Hill since 2002. “If you visit the river early in the morning, you’ll see a group of a dozen people who go down there with coffee and watch the sunrise every day.”
Historic homes and modern builds
Several homes in Rocky Hill Ferry Historic District date back to the 1700s, while others were built during the mid-19th century or the 1940s. Cape Cod and two-story Colonial Revival homes are common here, along with a few bungalows and saltbox builds, most of which have three bedrooms and span at least 1,500 square feet. Homes sit on spacious, tree-covered lots in front of acres of farmland, usually going for between $350,000 and $800,000 depending on upkeep. A few four-bedroom constructions built in the 1990s can be found behind long driveways that meander away from main roads and the other homes. These houses span over 4,000 square feet and sell for over $1 million.
Boating and hiking along the river
Residents might decide they want to make the most of the Connecticut River and don’t want to wait for the Rocky Hill ferry. Fortunately, the Glastonbury Marina is just a mile to the south and offers over 150 boat slips. Birdwatchers and hikers enjoy exploring the trails of Great Meadows Riverfront Open Space, a nature reserve just three miles to the north. Other waterfront trails can be found at parks along the river like Keeny Point National Wildlife Refuge.
Shopping and dining in South Glastonbury
Restaurants and grocery stores can be found in neighboring South Glastonbury and the South Glastonbury Historic District. Out-of-town visitors might be shocked by the hour-long waits at Sayulita Restaurant, but locals know the Mexican-inspired cuisine is like no other, with lobster enchiladas and scallop tostadas on the menu. For a taste of life on the farm, locals drink craft beers at Hops on the Hill Brewery, a renovated tobacco barn. During the summer, the bar brings out food trucks and live music, and patrons are welcome to bring their own chairs and blankets and picnic in the fields. For groceries, locals stop by Brookside Market, less than a mile away from most residences.

Take the ferry to Rocky Hill, drive everywhere else
The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry has been in operation since the 17th century and today carries pedestrians, cyclists and cars and their drivers across the Connecticut River. Depending on where they’re going, drivers might find the 10-minute ferry ride is faster than driving north to cross the river at Connecticut Route 3 and back down to Rocky Hill: a 20-minute drive. Beyond that, residents will probably find driving cars is the best way to get around, especially on highways like Connecticut State Routes 17 and 160.
