Between the Gulf of Mexico and Downtown Houston is South Houston, a small, incorporated community. The area has a robust Hispanic culture due to its large Hispanic population. According to 2021 United States Census results, 84% of the population reported themselves as Hispanic, and the area’s community spirit, retail and restaurants reflect that culture. “Nobody wants to leave there,” says Elizabeth Flores-Sauceda, a Realtor with MetroPlus Realty with nearly two decades of experience in the South Houston Market. “People feel comfortable because they feel like they can be themselves and show their culture since it is mostly a Hispanic community.”

Latin grocery stores and authentic Latin cuisine
“South Houston has a lot of Mexican restaurants and stores that specialize in Hispanic foods and groceries,” Flores-Saucedo says. Residents like to shop for weekly needs at either Fiesta Mart, which features a diverse selection of products but specializes in Latin foods, or Mi Tienda, an authentic Latino grocery store owned by H-E-B, Texas’ most popular grocery chain. For a traditional Mexican meal, locals head to Taqueria La Favorita, which Flores-Saucedo shares is always packed. While there is little in the community in the way of entertainment, the South Houston Branch Library is a frequent stop for those with small children. South Houston is also home to the Mixon's Memories Museum. A movie lovers' dream, the museum features movie props, like creatures and aliens, and memorabilia from Hollywood make-up artist Bart Mixon's personal collection. The city of South Houston also puts on events for residents to participate in throughout the year, including an annual Easter Egg Hunt held the Saturday before Easter.

Revitalizing housing inventory in South Houston
South Houston's housing inventory is going through revitalization. Investment properties for under $150,000 offer opportunities for a total remodel or a clean slate to build on. "The market has picked up because of the lower interest rates at the start of the year," Flores-Sauceda says. "It is moving fast and getting to the point where the inventory can't keep up." Other homes on the market range between $200,000 and $400,000 and come move-in ready. Most adhere to the bungalow or ranch style and are paired with large garages or prominent carports. Newer builds lean more contemporary or draw from traditional architecture.

Kicking goals and kick flipping
South Houston City Park is the area’s main green space, and it’s jam-packed with activity despite its small city block of space. Children can play under two large, shaded playgrounds, and pick-up basketball games are a common sight at the park’s sheltered basketball court. The park also has picnic areas and a gazebo for community gatherings or a quiet moment in the shade. Soccer fanatics can visit Futbolito, a soccer league with a massive complex of four lighted soccer fields, while extreme sports enthusiasts can test their talent at Southside Skate Park. The park features an on-site retailer for skateboard parts, apparel and other merchandise, along with plenty of ramps and bowls for skaters to practice on.
