Sequatchie offers a quiet lifestyle and outdoor recreation
Sequatchie is named for its location within the Sequatchie Valley. To the west of the community, tree-lined hills and rocky escarpments lead to the top of the Cumberland Plateau. Walden Ridge lies to the east. “Sequatchie is very rural and very private,” says Jessica Wright, an agent with Re/Max Realty South, who has lived in the area for more than 7 years. “It appeals to people who want a quieter lifestyle or who are into homesteading.” The region has also become popular among outdoor enthusiasts, who explore the nearby hiking trails, waterfalls and farms. Though visitors often pass through, “all the neighbors know each other. It has a small-town feel.” Chattanooga is about 30 miles away, which keeps residents connected to city amenities.
Activities for nature lovers and adventure seekers
One of the area’s main draws is its setting. “You’re surrounded by mountain ranges, so you get beautiful sunrises and sunsets,” Wright says. Nature lovers can visit Sequatchie Cave State Natural Area, where they might see the cave’s two endemic species — the royal snail and the Sequatchie caddisfly. There are many nearby hiking trails and some waterfalls, including Foster Falls, about 10 miles northwest. People can also learn to forage for morels or identify birds at Sequatchie Cove Farm.Adventure seekers can visit the Chattanooga Skydiving Company in Jasper or rock climb the region’s many sandstone cliffs. One popular climbing spot is Castle Rock, about 4 miles away, which has some challenging sport routes. Along Woodland Road, Trials Training Center offers off-road motorcycle courses.
Housing options in Sequatchie
Homes near Valley View Highway are generally within sight of one another. Unfenced, grassy lawns with private driveways cover the rolling landscape. Along Sequatchie Mountain and Coppinger Cove roads, working farms and tall hardwoods line the winding roads, and houses occasionally dot the way. There are some early-1900s farmhouses and midcentury ranch-style homes, as well as some post-2000 New Traditional-style residences. Not many listings come on the market, but recent sales have ranged between $225,000 and $375,000.
Farm-fresh produce, more options in Jasper or Chattanooga
There are a couple of convenience stores along Valley View Highway. Residents can pick up seasonal produce, grains and Sequatchie Cove Creamery cheese from the Trading Post, a weekly farm stand at Sequatchie Cove Farm. For more options, locals shop at the Ingles in Jasper or make the 30-mile trip to Chattanooga, where they can find grocery chains like Whole Foods and Aldi.
Sequatchie Cove periodically hosts farm-to-table dinners prepared by area chefs. The closest restaurants are Ramsey’s BBQ, in Whitwell, about 4 miles away. Jasper is a similar distance, with a few fast-food chains and locally owned restaurants.
Attending schools in Jasper and Whitwell
Children can attend Jasper Elementary School, which earns a C on Niche. Jasper Middle School gets a C-plus, and Whitwell High School receives a B-minus. Students at Whitwell can build career skills by taking welding, business management or nursing courses.
Car travel and access to Chattanooga
Residents rely on cars for travel. The two-lane Valley View Highway is the community’s main thoroughfare, and larger highways and interstates are within a 10-mile drive. Chattanooga is about 30 miles east, and the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is just over 40 miles away. The closest emergency room is at the Parkridge West Hospital, in Jasper, around 6 miles from Sequatchie.
Seasonal events in the Sequatchie area
Throughout the year, events take place both in and near Sequatchie. Trials Training Center periodically holds races, such as the Red Bull Tennessee Knockout in August. Local makers and artisans bring their goods to the annual Ketner’s Mill Fair in Whitwell each October. In December, neighboring Jasper has an outdoor skating rink at the center of the community and a Christmas parade. Wright says that classic car owners sometimes gather for cruises along the area roads, especially when fall leaf color is at its peak.
Considerations for homeowners
Homeowners maintain their own septic systems. Storms and heavy rain may cause flooding in the community, and lenders may require flood insurance. Sequatchie has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to 4 nationally.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
