Residential homes and local shops and restaurants in South Portland

Meetinghouse Hill was named for the 18th-century gathering place of its early residents. Today, the area is a charming community near Fore River, about 3 miles south of Downtown Portland. Residents live quiet lives, even so close to the city, and bus routes connect the area with Portland’s urban center. Nearby Casco Bay Bridge makes it convenient for commuters to head downtown. Alyssa Black, a small business owner who lives in the neighborhood, says, “Raising my kids in Meetinghouse Hill has been a pleasure. With access to local parks and close proximity to the river, we are never at a loss for things to do.” Students in Meetinghouse Hill are zoned to attend schools within the South Portland Public School District, which Niche rates an overall B-minus. At the heart of this residential area sits the Trout Brook Nature Area, and the South Portland Recreation Center isn’t too far away. With access to major shopping and urban amenities, as well as a quiet suburban lifestyle, Meetinghouse Hill combines everything that South Portland and downtown have to offer.

Classic New England homes on quiet residential streets

Two-story cottages and spacious, 200-year-old homes with front-facing gabled roofs are common in this South Portland neighborhood and give the area a classic New England feel. Cape Cods with wooden shingles come in a variety of ages and styles, and though homes sit close together, being close to one’s neighbors creates a tight-knit community. These single-family homes range widely in cost. Smaller homes or fixer-uppers in need of some elbow grease can cost between $250,000 and $400,000, while move-in-ready modest cottages, split-levels and Cape Cods may cost between $450,000 and $600,000. Homes that are priced between $650,000 and $800,000 include historic Colonial manors, mid-century raised-ranch and hipped-roof four-square style homes. There are also a few new constructions with modern elements that fall within this price range. A selection of homes ranging between $900,000 and $1.5 million may have large floorplans, plenty of yard space or state-of-the-art renovations. The Meetinghouse Lofts community is a small condo complex with units ranging between $550,000 and $750,000. Floor plans include high ceilings, small balconies or patios and even a fireplace.
