Small-town charm in a Minneapolis suburb
The highlight of South St. Paul is its sense of community, which this town exudes in every sense of the word, from the people to local businesses. "People who live in South St. Paul have lived here for a long time, and they appreciate that they know their neighborhood," says city clerk Deanna Werner. A great illustration of that is the lineup of annual local events, such as Flannel Fest and Kaposia Days, a festival that began in 1976. Home prices range between $200,000 to $350,000, and houses often sell fast, in part because that price range is lower than in comparable areas nearby. When it comes to shopping and dining, there are little to no big-name brands in the neighborhood. Instead, residents support local businesses like Knowland Fresh Foods, the neighborhood's go-to grocery store.

The majority are single-family, starting at $200,000 and going up to $350,000. Many line the sidewalks, with modest yard sizes due to their proximity to the city. Green spaces are highly coveted. According to Werner, "There's even a waiting list at the community garden because people don't want to give up their backyards."

The majority of businesses in the area are locally owned. For loose-leaf tea and banana bread, residents visit Black Sheep Coffee Cafe, a common spot to meet up with neighbors: "There's always people in there just sitting and chatting- you will definitely run into people you know when you hop in there," Werner says. Werner also personally recommends Hilltop International Cuisine, a family-owned Pakistani restaurant. "I've had their curry chicken, and it was delicious." To experience a long-standing neighborhood establishment since 1963, residents dine at The Coop, a restaurant offering fried chicken and other American classics. Locals head to Knowland Fresh Foods, a locally owned and operated grocery store for groceries.
