'Small-town living' in Southampton
Just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, Southampton Township in Somerset County is made up of boundless forested areas, family farms and the small Wellersburg borough. This rural area is in the shadow of the Savage Mountains and doesn’t often see new faces, but the people who live here make the most of the land for generations. Dan Rose, who runs Rose Family Homestead with his wife, is one such resident who settled in the area. “My wife’s family owns the property, and we decided to move up from West Virginia and purchase a section of the land when her aunt moved away,” Rose says. “I’ve always wanted to raise animals, and it’s great because her family is all within walking distance of us. Her cousins run Emerick’s Pure Maple. I think there’s been a big exodus from big cities to small-town living. I think people want to get back to providing for themselves.”

Older homes with large lots surrounded by farmland
Wellersburg has most of the homes in the township, and the rest line the highway or fill the Kennels Mill Pond area in the north, surrounded by family farms. Homes mainly have ranch, Cape Cod or national designs and range from $75,000 to $250,000. Each home sits on large lots and runs on sewage tanks and well water due to the rural setting. Many properties have been standing since the 1920s, but some were built around the 1960s. Though it doesn’t happen often, torrential rain can flood the area immediately around U.S. Route 160.
Supporting local farmers and family businesses
Rose Family Homestead has been producing non-GMO products for over three years. Anyone can order chicken, lamb or pork as it’s available, and the farm also sells all-natural tallow soap, shampoo and conditioner bars made from locally sourced ingredients. Emerick's Pure Maple Products is a third-generation farm that produces syrup, candy, coffee and sauces, all from syrup tapped by the Emerick family. The only nearby grocery store options are the Dollar General in Hyndman and the Food Lion in Meyersdale. Rose says his family visits Smith's Custom Meats & Retail in Hyndman for fresh cuts. Hyndman also has The Hornet’s Nest, a small restaurant that serves specialty pizzas and wings. The White House Restaurant is a family-owned spot in Meyersdale with rotating daily specials of home-style dishes.

From Somerset County Fair to Pennsylvania Maple Festival
Wellersburg District Volunteer Fire Company hosts community events, like the Craft & Vendor Show every summer, where vendors sell almost everything from baked goods and handmade soaps to fresh produce. The department also hosts Fry-Days every third Saturday with crispy fried chicken cooked by firefighters, plus car shows and live music. Ticket sales to the monthly event support the department. Somerset County is known for its maple production, so it’s no surprise that the Pennsylvania Maple Festival is a major event for Meyersdale and the surrounding areas. The event lasts seven days and features an antique show, tree tapping ceremony, quilt show and demonstrations on how clear maple sap can be transformed into an array of sweet treats. The Emrick family brings their own maple creations to sell and offer for the Maple King competition.

Zion Community Church is off Route 160 in Wellersburg and has been serving the area since the early 1800s in a building that was completed in 1857. Comp’s Church is north of the Rose and Emrick farms and has been standing since 1879.
Reconnecting with nature on the GAP Trail
The Great Allegheny Passage runs through the south corner of the township, with memorable stops like Big Savage Vista and Big Savage Tunnel. The bike line, more commonly known as the GAP Trail, comes up from Southampton Township, through Greenville Township and up to Meyersdale. There are no parks, but State Game Lands 82 in Fairhope and the Danner Holz Whitetails preserve are alternative options for exploring the outdoors.
