Downtown Southington is a charming area with a mix of historic and modern elements.
The downtown hub of a large Connecticut town
With more going on than its surrounding town, Downtown Southington offers shopping and dining and slightly more walkability. "It's a nice balance of having access to everywhere while still having quality schools, a variety of housing and entertainment options," says Louis Perillo III, the Economic Development Director of Southington. With competitive school districts and more affordable housing than neighboring towns, the area is excellent for young professionals and families looking for a community to grow in. Townspeople regularly gather at events and local shops, so while Southington is large, the locals know each other and take pride in their hometown and its accessibility.
Where locals shop local
Downtown Southington's restaurants are a major draw for the townsfolk. "Restaurant row," Perillo calls the downtown strip, "has a bit of everything. It's diverse, and there's Thai, American and Italian food. There are even two speakeasy-style bars in Dial 9 Prohibition Lounge and The Manhattan." Alongside highly-rated restaurants are a few breweries, coffee shops and even a video arcade bar. "There is always something to do in Downtown Southington," Perillo notes. Perkatory Coffee Roasters is an absolute must-try spot in the area for caffeine lovers looking for classic brews of delicious blends and some groovy merch to wear on their way out of the shop. Most residents do their weekly grocery shopping at the Stop & Shop in the neighborhood, but Queen Street, to the north, has additional shopping with familiar retail and big box stores.
Pepper Pot in Southington has been a popular spot for locals and visitors for many years.

Townhouses or large houses
Most Southington homes sit in subdivisions that branch off from one another, but Downtown Southington has different layouts to offer. North Main Street runs through the neighborhood and has many townhouses and multifamily buildings with units as low as $120,000. Houses outside the center provide more square footage and larger yards, often with a matching price tag to accompany them. Small cape cods and ranches built in the 1950s sell for as low as $200,000, while modern craftsman houses with new finishes, attached garages and large yards regularly reach $700,000. "It's a safe community that is relatively affordable," Perillo says. With a median single-family price of $345,000, Downtown Southington, and Southington as a whole, offers Farmington Valley living without Farmington Valley prices.

Competitive sports at the local high school
Downtown Southington families with young children can expect to drop their students off at Derynoski Elementary School, rated an A-minus by Niche. Next in line is the B-plus-rated Joseph A. DePaolo Middle School. With a 12 to 1 student-teacher, students will get a considerate amount of one-on-one attention in class. Sports are a large part of student life at Southington High, and the school's sports teams enjoy plenty of support from the community at their games. The B-plus-rated school also has a 1 to 1 student device ratio, meaning that there is one computer for every student enrolled.

An 80-mile trail runs through the neighborhood
Though Connecticut weather doesn't reach sweltering highs, the summer humidity brings many residents to Southington Memorial Park's public swimming pool. Young ones can cool off on the splash pad or join a Little League team that plays on the many baseball diamonds of the park. Locals utilize the tennis courts, basketball court and walking trails that run through the woods and around a small duck pond. The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail is over 80 miles long and spans from New Haven to beyond the Massachusetts border. The trail intersects Downtown Southington, running along its western end. A popular spot for dog owners is the Southington Dog Park. The fenced-in grassy field has enough space to chuck tennis balls and let frisbees fly.

A community that loves to gather
Festivals are common in town, with annual events lighting up the streets seemingly every month. Outdoor concerts take over the Town Green during the summer, and parades run up and down the main street for a few national holidays. In addition to Taste of Southington, which highlights local restaurants, Perillo mentions that "The Apple Harvest Festival brings in over 100,000 people annually. The apple fritters are the most famous thing there."
Downtown Southington takes pride in being a welcoming community and a perfect place to visit.
Centrally located to two of the state’s large cities
Southington is only 20 miles from Hartford and 30 miles from New Haven, making it a viable commuter option for those working in either city. "Southington is centrally located and is right off Interstate 84," Perillo states. "It's easy to get to Hartford and the employers in the area." There is only one bus stop, so residents are car-reliant for getting around. The Hospital of Central Connecticut is in the neighborhood's southern end, and Bradley International Airport is just over 30 miles north.
