"The un-Hamptons"

North Fork is on a 30-mile peninsula opposite South Fork and the Hamptons, surrounded by the Long Island Sound, beaches and farmland. The region was once considered the cousin of the Hamptons, but that’s rapidly changing. “It’s the un-Hamptons,” says Bridgit Elkin, a Realtor with Compass Greater NY LLC who has been selling homes in the area for 6 years. “With people getting priced out in the Hamptons, North Fork has become the alternative region. It used to be in the shadow of the Hamptons. Not anymore.”

With no chains, shopping locally has a new meaning

Elkin says one unique attribute of North Fork is that there are no chain stores once you reach the peninsula. All the shops are local businesses with over 60 storefronts across the region. Examples of the types of stores include Lydia’s Antique & Stained Glass and Marika’s Eclectic Boutique. Mattituck Marketplace and Mattituck Marketplace are two local grocery stores in North Fork. About Food is a Southold market offering an impressive selection of local products. Residents seeking a Target or Stop & Shop must make the 3-mile trek to Riverhead. There is a vibrant restaurant scene and Elkin says the community has developed a thriving “foodie scene.” A Lure Chowder House & Oysteria is North Fork’s spot to enjoy clam chowder and lobsters. Michelangelo Southold is a pizza parlor with ample seating and is one of 16 storefronts at the Feather Hill Village. North Fork also has 20 wineries, including Bedell Cellars and Meadowlark North F
