Neighborhood in Spartanburg, South Carolina
Spartanburg County 29306
A neighborhood that is home to one of Spartanburg’s historical landmarks, the Beacon Drive-In, and in the midst of a massive transformation plan, Highland hopes to blend the old and the new.
Within the last two years, Highland has seen new development in the form of town houses off Wofford Street, which qualify for Section 8 housing. Plans are in the works to add a community center, clubhouse and playground for residents. The more established housing developed along the neighborhood’s winding, hilly streets dates back to the 1950s and ‘60s. Ranch homes, bungalows and split-levels mingle on small, sloped lots. Buyers commonly add chain link fencing around the petite front yards to provide a touch of security and separation from neighboring homes. Pricing tends to fall between $150,000 to $185,000, depending on whether the owner has made modern upgrades.
Since 1946, the Beacon Drive-In has been a Spartanburg staple. For decades, it’s been beloved by locals and visitors alike for its classic car cruise-ins and Southern-style fare like the Chili Cheese-a-Plenty – a burger piled high with onion rings and French fries. The local treasure is perched in the neighborhood's northwest corner, putting it within walking distance for many residents. The owners have opened the doors to the building and invited customers to come inside, but many still like to order curbside.
Just a mile from downtown Spartanburg, you’ll have common conveniences at your fingertips. There are a host of eclectic eateries and breweries like El Paso Tacos & Tequila or Main Street Pub. Grocery essentials can be found just east of the neighborhood at Piggly Wiggly.
Students who call Highland home attend Mary H. Wright Elementary School, Carver Middle School and Spartanburg High School. In 2016, the high school got a new campus, which garnered national awards for being environmentally friendly. It also features an expansive football stadium and Fine Arts Center used by all of Spartanburg District 7. Because of its diversity, college preparation, clubs and activities, Spartanburg High School earned an A- from Niche.
Both Stewart Park and the Bethlehem Center are essential to the residents of Highland and have become unofficial gathering spots. After school, kids can head to the Bethlehem Center to play sports, take art lessons or get tutoring. The center also houses a health clinic for locals of all ages. In the summer months, Stewart Park comes alive, with kids running around the splash pad activated by the push of a button. A covered pavilion offers a spot for you to stay cool as they enjoy the splash pad or playground. If you’d like to get some fresh air or exercise of your own, the park features a lighted, paved walking trail and a fenced-in basketball court.
In 2020, the city approved a 10-year plan to make improvements to the neighborhood while still preserving and protecting its history and residents. The goal is to eventually add housing, pedestrian bridges, make upgrades to Stewart Park and add even more green spaces.
Highland offers buyers the opportunity to be part of a strong, active community with hope for a bright future.
