Buyers take advantage of Saxon’s quiet streets and proximity to downtown Spartanburg. “With Spartanburg Methodist College there and the easy access to the city, Saxon is starting to see some growth,” says Lupe Rosales, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “It’s close to everything – WestGate Mall and the shops and restaurants downtown.”

Mill homes dating back to the 1920s dominate the area’s housing stock and sit on compact lots. Occasionally, you’ll come across streets lined by split-level and ranch homes. While yard space is limited, many homeowners have made enhancements with shrubbery and fencing. It’s not unusual to have the convenience of off-street parking with gravel or paved driveways.

Due to the growth of Spartanburg and the surrounding areas, these more established homes appeal to first-time buyers and investors who are making modern upgrades to the interior and exterior. “Even if they’ve been remodeled, the price point typically falls below $200,000,” Rosales says. “That’s much lower than the other neighborhoods closer to downtown Spartanburg, where the average is around $288,000.”

Students attend Cleveland Elementary School, which uses a ‘Leader in Me’ education model to help children establish leadership skills. They later attend Fairforest Middle School before filtering into Dorman or Spartanburg High schools. The middle school campus houses the Lincoln Science Center and Planetarium, used by schools across Spartanburg County District 6 for lessons and activities in astronomy and earth science, among other subjects. Within the last decade, Spartanburg High School debuted a new campus that earned national recognition for its environmental impact.

With Spartanburg Methodist College and the Salvation Army Century of Service Park settled in the heart of the area, residents have ample opportunities to get fresh air. Stroll through the small campus packed with mature trees and punctuated by a fountain. Less than a mile north of the college, paved walkways wind around the perimeter of the Salvation Army Century Park, providing a peaceful place to go for a stroll. In the center of the green space is a small playground where you can take the kids to have some fun. Picnic tables are dotted nearby, so you can keep an eye on them as they play.

Two miles east of Saxon, Cleveland Park stretches across more than 120 acres, allowing for easy access to unwind with a walk or bike along the lakeside promenade. This park boasts a more expansive playground called ‘The Great Adventure,’ with multiple sections packed with adventure, including climbing towers, rock walls, sandboxes, slides and caves sitting on a rubberized surface.

Residents leave the secluded residential streets to run errands or have a nice meal at one of the city’s array of restaurants. Most eateries sit adjacent to the area along West Main Street, including Main Street Pub and Cribb’s Kitchen. If you’re looking for something quick to take home after spending some time at Cleveland Park, stop by Sully’s Steamers less than a mile south along North Church Street for one of their sandwiches served on bagels. You’ll have to travel two to three miles outside the area to find groceries. There is a Piggly Wiggly just south of the action downtown, or you can visit the Costco and Walmart near WestGate Mall off Interstate 26.

In Saxon, you can find a comfortable and central spot to put down roots.
