Just east of downtown Spokane
East Central is in the heart of Spokane. “People choose this neighborhood for the convenience,” says Steve Silbar with John L Scott Real Estate, a Realtor who moved to the area in 2016. “You have access to downtown without living in the middle of it. You have Sprague Avenue, which has a lot of my favorite restaurants and shops. Trent Avenue industries and the University District are also big centers for employment.” Because of this convenience, the neighborhood has grown throughout the 2000s, and now it has over 3,300 homes and over 12,000 people. The city of Spokane has matched this growth with neighborhood improvement projects, such as the widening of Interstate 90 and the creation of the Ben Burr Trail. The construction of the North Spokane Corridor, a 10-mile north-south freeway, is estimated to be completed in 2030 and will likely bring even more people to the area.

Historic homes and new construction in East Central
East Central is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Spokane, with some homes that go back to the 1870s. Many other homes were built in the 1900s and 1910s, but the neighborhood has everything from the 1950s to 2010s. Despite their diversity in age, most properties are Craftsman bungalows between $145,000 and $375,000. Homes between $400,000 and $650,000 might have two stories and are likely more renovated than the budget-friendly properties, and they typically have more square footage. Homeowners are only about half of the market, and renters make up the other half. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. In an effort to reduce crime near downtown, the city deployed eight extra officers per day in October 2024.

Longstanding restaurants like Sonnenburg’s Market and Dick’s Hamburgers
Downtown is Spokane’s center for shopping and dining, and East Central has some of the city’s most famous spots. Among the many businesses on Sprague Avenue, Sonnenburg’s Market & Deli was established in 1891 and is now the oldest meat market in town. This corner store has groceries and made-to-order sandwiches, plus in-house jerky and fresh fish fillets. Dick’s Hamburgers has been just off Third Avenue since 1965, and it serves classic drive-in food. They’re known for their cheap prices and retro signage. For a nightlife scene, downtown has more than 25 cocktail bars, breweries and pubs. This area also has boutiques and department stores, and the Spokane Valley Mall is about 10 miles east of the neighborhood. There's also a Fred Meyer off of Third Avenue in the eastern part of the neighborhood for groceries.

Lots to do with downtown Spokane events
As an extension of downtown Spokane, East Central has easy access to the city’s annual events. The Spokane Lilac Festival is the oldest of these, started in 1938. Coinciding with the lilac bloom in May, this weeklong celebration is most known for its Armed Forces Torchlight Parade, which honors service members from Fairchild Air Force Base and the region overall. Bloomsday, a 12K race, happens around the same time, as roughly 30,000 people weave through the city streets. Downtown’s Riverfront Park hosts events almost every month, such as concerts, food festivals and theater productions, and many other events happen in the city as a whole. “Because a lot of people have moved to Spokane, we’re now attracting entertainment that we weren’t getting ten years ago,” Silbar says. “Paul McCartney started his world tour here in 2022, and Foo Fighters came in 2023.”
The Thursday Market is located at the local Grant Park.

Hopping on Sprague, Trent and I-90
Some of East Central’s commercial areas have sidewalks, and pedestrians can walk around wide residential streets. Bikers have the Centennial and Ben Burr trails, as well as other routes around the neighborhood. Most people drive around Spokane as a whole, though. Sprague and Trent avenues are major thoroughfares, and Interstate 90 is accessible on the neighborhood’s south side. All these routes go west into downtown Spokane, roughly a 2-mile trip. Noise increases toward this area and along the interstate, and trains run next to Trent Avenue. An alternative into downtown, Spokane Transit Authority operates route 9 on Sprague. Its buses run every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 15 to 60 minutes on weekends. Providence Medical Center is near downtown, and Spokane International Airport is about 10 miles west.

Abundant options with Spokane Public Schools, U District
Of the four public elementary schools here, Stevens Elementary serves most of the neighborhood and gets a C-plus from Niche. Two middle schools are also in this area, but most students go to Chase Middle, rated a B-plus. Similarly, Ferris High is one of three high schools in the area, and it gets another B-plus. It has a leadership class for juniors and seniors, and students can participate in its Coats 4 Kids program; this program has collected thousands of coats for local children since 2001. Several collegiate options are on the neighborhood’s northeast corner, called the U District. Gonzaga University consistently ranks among the top 100 national universities, and about 90% of its graduates are placed in jobs, graduate programs, military service or public service. Washington State University, Spokane, specializes in health sciences, and students can get real-world experience at the area’s many hospitals.

Liberty and Underhill parks, Centennial Trail
Liberty Park is one of Spokane’s original parks, built in the early 1900s. It used to have a swimming hole, big cliffs and other amenities, but much of its acreage was cut off by Interstate 90 in the 1960s. In the 1970s, a new version of the park was constructed, and some of that acreage was added back. Though ruins of the old park are still visible to freeway drivers, this green space now has a disc golf course, a library and an aquatic center with five lap lanes. Additionally, the park’s Ben Burr Trail and greenway connects east to Underhill Park. Its multiuse field has a sand volleyball court and two baseball diamonds. The Spokane River is also on the neighborhood’s north side, and its Centennial Trail follows the water for about 65 miles. While a full trek leads to Idaho, the segment closest to the neighborhood goes through Gonzaga and Washington State universities.
Underhill park is located in a mostly residential neighborhood.
