Small-town America in Central New Jersey
In Central Jersey, 40 miles south of New York City, is Spotswood, an Americana suburb that lives up to the tagline — “a friendly community” — on its welcome sign. “I grew up here, and my dad didn’t lock his doors in 50 years,” says John Horvath, who has over 20 years of real estate experience. “It’s got that small-town feel, but it’s close to highways and shopping. You’re only one hour outside of Manhattan.“ Duhernal Lake, in Spotswood’s backyard, is a quiet fishing spot off the Main Street shopping corridor, and nearby forested parks supply hundreds of acres of recreational green space.
Comprehensive local shopping and nearby malls
Main Street, at the heart of Spotswood, has most of the neighborhood’s locally owned shops and restaurants. Places like Panini Bistro and Mi Familia are great for a quick bite, and at MJ’s Restaurant, diners can enjoy upscale bar food while live bands rock out every Friday and Saturday night. St. Peter’s church runs a thrift store, and pottery-making classes at The Clay Pot are fun date-night and family-friendly outings. Just north, a ShopRite makes grocery shopping easy. East of Spotswood, Route 18 goes through neighboring East Brunswick and has a mall with a movie theater and department stores. “What appeals to people is the close-knit feel, but not being out in the sticks where you gotta drive 10 minutes to get a bagel,” Horvath says.
Panini Bistro offers fresh sandwiches, soups and other lunch delights.

Spacious, new traditional style houses with two-car garages and sprawling lawns can be priced in the high $800,000s. On Main Street near Duhernal Lake, the Brookview Terrace condo complex has smaller and more affordable units to own and rent. In these two-story brick buildings, condos are priced from $150,000 to $200,000.

Local playgrounds and diverse green space nearby

About 6 miles southeast in Jamesburg, Thompson Park has 675 acres of green space, with hiking trails, dog parks, athletic fields and a boat launch into Manalapan Lake. “It’s a great place to go fishing,” Horvath says. “They got a great hill to go sledding down in the winter. I’ve been doing that since I was a kid, and I bring my kids there.”
