A modern subdivision with natural appeal
Just north of Lake Springfield, the Lake Pointe subdivision combines modern homes and natural beauty. When it was first established in 1994, each front yard was required to have at least two trees. As a result, today, there is more mature growth than might be expected in such a new development. Two ponds sit within the neighborhood, and Lake Springfield's banks are just yards away from the southernmost homes. New homes continue to be added as recently as 2024, and an active homeowners association ensures the neighborhood is always looking its best. Zoned for Chatham's highly rated schools and tucked back from any city bustle, Lake Pointe is a popular choice for families.

Early 2000s homes on kid-friendly streets
The Lake Pointe community has two parts: an apartment complex and a collection of single-family homes. Lake Pointe Apartments is a popular choice for students looking to be close to the University of Illinois Springfield. On the other hand, the Lake Pointe subdivision caters more to older residents and families. One of the more expensive neighborhoods in Springfield, homes here were built from 1995 through 2024 and come in New Traditional styles. Prices range from $300,000 to $500,000, depending on age and size. The average home size here is 3,000 square feet, and the yards range from a quarter to a half-acre, so there's plenty of room to spread out. The neighborhood's landscaped lawns are lined with sidewalks and illuminated at night by streetlamps. At the end of the streets, cul-de-sacs are often filled with kids playing outside after school.

Lake Pointe Homeowners Association
All homes are part of the Lake Pointe Homeowners Association, which has a monthly fee of $10. The HOA has certain expectations for neighborhood appearance, with restrictions on additions and other exterior features. They plan community events and share messages on an active, private Facebook page. The HOA also maintains common areas — primarily the two ponds within the neighborhood. Docks, boating and swimming are not allowed, but some homes enjoy pond-side views, and residents can go fishing from the shore.

Boat clubs and lakeside recreation
Lake Pointe's biggest outdoor attraction is Lake Springfield. Though the lake is not open for swimming, parks like Marine Point offer rocky shorelines for fishing and launching boats. "People go to the lake all the time to paddleboard, and there are spots to put kayaks in the water, too," says Abby Birsfield, a leasing agent with Lake Pointe Apartments. "It's nice to have the lake right nearby." Residents who want to own a sailing or motorized boat have nearby storage options. Along the water's edge, the private Island Bay Yacht Club has boat docks, a bar, a swimming pool and sailing teams. A regular adult membership here costs $215 monthly, and it can be hard to get in. "In the past, the yacht club has had a year-long wait list," Birsfield says. Prop Club and Springfield Ski & Boat Club are smaller but more affordable options with boat docking and community events.

Just west of the railroad tracks
Even though the lake is so close, Lake Pointe is cut off from parks and boat clubs by the train tracks to the east. A homeowner might be able to see the Springfield Ski & Boat Club from their backyard, but it's nearly a 4-mile drive to get around the tracks to make it there. The railroad rushes past directly adjacent to the neighborhood's east side, but a buffer of trees helps mitigate noise. Most of the noise comes from when the train passes over the nearest cross street, Toronto Road, and it blares its horn.

University programs and nearby parks
Lake Pointe is about 2 miles from the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) and Lincoln Land Community College, so it's not uncommon to be neighbors with a professor. The Lake Pointe Apartments are often considered by students who are okay with a short drive to campus. The university has occasional sports games and nationally ranked performances at the UIS Performing Arts Center. Open to the public, the center features dance, theater and music programs. Other attractions within a 10-minute drive of Lake Pointe include the Henry Robinson Zoo and Southwind Park, which has a popular summer splash pad, playgrounds and a small lake.

Heading into Springfield or Chatham
Lake Pointe is entirely residential, but Toronto Road to the north has a few dining options. There are several chain restaurants, as well as Route 66 Motorheads Bar and Grill, a novelty museum and restaurant that celebrates the history of the iconic roadway. Just 4 miles away, there's an Aldi and a Walmart for quick shopping trips, but more shopping options mean a trip further into Springfield. "Lake Pointe is right off I-55, which connects north to downtown Springfield in about 10 minutes, so it's actually a pretty convenient location," Birsfield says. Interstate 55 also connects north to Chicago and south to St. Louis. The small village of Chatham is 7 miles away and also offers restaurants and retail shopping.
Public transit in Lake Pointe is frequent with routes on major streets and near the colleges.
Downtown Springfield is a short drive from Lake Pointe and home to the state Capitol Building.
