Set in the far west of Springfield, the well-heeled community of Mill Creek takes pride in its clean streets and manicured lawns. Constructed in the early 1990s at the site of a former timber pasture, the neighborhood’s layout evokes the idea of good living on the edge of the woods despite the area’s proximity to shopping and other amenities. “It’s far enough out that it’s almost country living,” says Ralph Hanauer, Alderman of Springfield’s tenth ward. “But you’ve still got access to the city.”
Homes
With no homes constructed before 1992, Mill Creek maintains a modern atmosphere that’s rare, if not impossible, in older neighborhoods. Streets are connected with narrow, well-maintained sidewalks that pass lawns wide enough to offer privacy for those who like to keep their curtains drawn back on sunny days. Homes are accented with details like screened-in porches, pools and two-car garages, and rows of trees provide shade. Contemporary Craftsman are among the most popular housing styles, along with modern ranch-style homes and neotraditional designs. Price ranges tend to follow size and household amenities, with one-story homes starting in the low $300,000s and sprawling cul-de-sac houses peaking in the low $500,000s.
Homes in Mill Creek often have amenities such as multi car garages or basketball hoops.
Tree lined streets and sidewalks make Mill Creek a delightful place to live.

Renovations at Springfield High
Students can begin their education at Lindsay Elementary School, which has a B-minus on Niche and takes pride in its many veteran educators. “When teachers come here, they stay here,” says Jennifer Hanson-Russell, principal of Lindsay Elementary. “We have eight teachers who are National Board certified.” From there, they can attend Grant Middle School, which has a C. Older students can finish at Springfield High School, which has an A and is beginning renovations to upgrade academic and athletic facilities. Those interested in a private education can attend Our Savior’s Lutheran School, which has an A and serves prekindergarten through eighth grade. “It’s one class per grade: we’re that small,” says Carmen Yago, principal of Our Savior’s. “As a consequence, we’re incredibly closely knit.”
Lindsay School has 423 students in grades K-5.
