Turning history into a home in Springfield
Sitting at the confluence of major roads while being a moment’s walk from downtown Springfield, Memorial Square is a historic neighborhood that has evolved over the years. While retaining buildings of the past, with the looming Gothic tower of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral and the Renaissance style Springfield Street Trolley Barn anchoring the neighborhood, it has developed into a residential haven thanks to convenience to the commercial and industrial centers in Springfield. Residents use the network of sidewalks and accessible public transportation to get around, with nearby employers including two major health systems, grocery distribution centers and various industrial companies.

Food trucks and pop-up food trailers dot the parking lots of Memorial Square, with local favorites like La Taqueria Del Pueblo and El Charros serving up tacos, tortas, burritos and more. For many, Puerto Rico Bakery has been the go-to for generations of families, with a menu of Puerto Rican sandwiches, chicken, pernil, and more. It’s also one of the top spots for groceries, as numerous small grocery stores dot the neighborhood, including Medina’s and Bethania markets. Residents looking to tackle all their errands at once head over the bridge to the Riverdale Center and Shops, with The Home Depot, ALDI, Kohl’s, Costco, and other big box stores all in one convenient spot.

Remembering the cultures that have made Memorial Square
“Everyone goes to the Big E,” says Ahmet Gunay, Sales Agent with Premier Choice Realty Inc., “It’s maybe the biggest state festival in the East and one of the biggest in the United States.” Officially called The Eastern States Exposition, it’s located just across the river but is still heavily attended by Memorial Square residents. “It started as sort of an end of harvest festival, farmers coming together” Gunay goes on, “And it’s evolved over a hundred years into the Big E, they have national performers that come in, food and more.” Closer to home, Glendi, an annual Greek Festival hosted at the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral's Greek Cultural Center, brings traditional Greek dancing, food, and a welcoming atmosphere to Memorial Square the first weekend of September. And the weekend after, the Springfield Puerto Rican Parade marches down the heart of Memorial Square every September and brings out the entire neighborhood to celebrate a common heritage.
Colorful and quirky multi-unit homes
The colorful turrets of multi-unit Queen Annes poke above the oaks and maples that are scattered throughout the neighborhood, alongside slightly more traditional and conservative Colonial revival single-family homes and multi-unit apartments. Sidewalks run tight by the homes, although in some areas a deep setback of green space between the on-street parking and the sidewalk provides residents with an informal front yard where neighbors will sometimes gather. Many of these larger homes are split into multiple units with one being owner-occupied and others being rented, or all being rented – nearly 90% of households are renters. Most single family and two-unit homes sell in the range of $230,000 and $340,000, while homes with three units or ones with more than three bedrooms per unit may go for $400,000 or higher.

Named after a respected community leader, the Jaime Ulloa Park was recently redeveloped and features a ball field, basketball courts, a handball court, a playground and numerous picnic tables for residents of all ages – locals meet up for lively games of dominoes. It’s an incredibly walkable and bikeable area as well, allowing residents to have options. This includes for medical needs, as both Baystate Medical Center and Mercy Medical Center, two of the largest health systems in the region, are in the neighborhood.
