Southside has shopping, dining and recreation
Those looking for retirement communities, brick homes in a semi-gated subdivision or easy access to dining options settle in the Southside neighborhood. CoxHealth Medical Center South, one of the area’s biggest employers, sits north of the area. When their shift ends at CoxHealth Medical Center South, residents can stop by popular restaurants like Ocean Zen or FD’s Grillhouse for dinner. Some might drive 4 miles to dine out in downtown Springfield. Golf pros and beginners unwind by playing a round at Twin Oaks Country Club. Locals who prefer to spend the day on the water take a short trip to Lake Springfield Park to fish or kayak. Southside has convenient recreation and dining options for homeowners at every stage of life.
The Southside neighborhood offers a wide range of homes built from the 1970s to the present.
The Twin Oaks Country Club located in the heart of the Southside neighborhood provides golf and racquet sport options.

Reserving a table at Ocean Zen
Residents have multiple options when they want to stock up on groceries. Shoppers can browse the organic options at MaMa Jean’s Natural Market, everyday items at the Walmart Neighborhood Market off West El Camino Alto Street or bulk selections at Sam’s Club. The Battlefield Mall, which sits 4 miles north of Southside, has plenty of shops and restaurants, including Nakato Japanese Restaurant.
When locals want to dine out at a nearby spot, they might book a reservation at Ocean Zen to enjoy Asian-fusion dishes. Some grab lunch or drinks with friends at the Habaneros Mexican Restaurant + Cantina. Guests can expect to wait for a table at FD’s Grillhouse as their classic American dishes keep hungry customers filing through the door.
Ocean Zen is a Springfield favorite for Asian cuisine in the Southside neighborhood.
The CoxHealth Medical Center South campus sits north of the neighborhood. Locals often work in the spacious campus, and Sherwood residents of all ages can visit for routine or emergency medical services. Whether they’re one of the 12,000 Springfield residents who work for CoxHealth or they need easy access to the hospital’s physician offices or neuroscience center, many residents consider it a plus to live near the medical complex, Senn says.
Brick homes in Ironbridge or 55-plus areas
The semi-gated Ironbridge subdivision and 55-plus communities filled with brick homes make up the neighborhood. “The area is mostly traditional neighborhoods, and some older folk move into the patio homes there,” says Dan Senn, an experienced Realtor with Re/Max House of Brokers Home who has helped multiple homeowners move into the area. Home prices often range from $250,000 to $500,000, and most feature three or more bedrooms, multicar garages, large yards and wide paved driveways. Senn also says Springfield’s proximity to the brickmaking industry in Arkansas makes it cheaper to build those homes in the city than in other parts of the state. As a result, homeowners in Southside get sturdy, low-maintenance properties. “We get strong winds, and you don’t hear about bricks blowing off the side of homes like vinyl siding,” Senn says. Most residents own their homes, but those looking to rent can find multiple apartment complexes like Kelly Green Apartments or the 55-plus Coryell Commons.

Driving downtown on South Campbell Street
CU Transit buses run along South Campbell Avenue and take locals who want to visit downtown Springfield from the Library Center or nearby apartments a direct route. Skinny paved sidewalks line one side of the street, giving residents a clear path for walking their dogs, but most residents rely on their cars to get around the neighborhood or travel to Battlefield Mall. They drive down the James River Freeway to visit the mall or South Campbell Avenue to get to downtown Springfield.
The City Utilities bus pulls up to the next stop on it's route through the Southside neighborhood.
Southside residents travel along Campbell Ave on the neighborhoods west edge.

Hanging out at Twin Oaks or The Library Center
The tranquil Lake Springfield Park is only a 4-mile drive from the neighborhood. Locals take their kayaks or fishing rods for a peaceful day at the park. Those who don’t enjoy water sports visit the park to walk or bike along the paved trailway that winds from the parking lot, along the lake and to the boathouse.
For a different kind of outdoor oasis closer to home, residents become members at the Twin Oaks Country Club. Twin Oaks features 18 holes of rolling hills, pockets of dense trees and manicured Bermuda grass. The course has hosted golf legends like Arnold Palmer, while its tennis courts and beach-style swimming pool draw non-golfers. “The people I’ve talked to like being backed up to the golf course. They set off fireworks for the Fourth of July, so people sit out on their patios to watch the show,” Senn says. The Library Center sits across South Campbell Avenue for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Young kids can sit down for storytime, while older kids and parents might stop in for seasonal arts and crafts events.

Kickapoo High has Scholar Bowl pros
Kids often start out at the Walt Disney Elementary School. Cherokee Middle School is the natural next step since the campus sits in the south half of the neighborhood. The school’s athletic offerings are on-target, as Cherokee counts archery among its sports options. Teens head to Kickapoo High School and can try out for formidable teams like the Scholar Bowl team or girls’ basketball team. Niche gives all three schools a B-plus.
Students at Disney Elementary range from Kindergarten through 5th grade.
Cherokee Middle School provides public education for 5th through 8th grade students in Springfield's Southside neighborhood.
