Forested, lakeside community close to Portland
Standish is a wooded township in central Cumberland County, named to honor the Mayflower’s military officer, Miles Standish. The enclave comprises several villages buried in red and white pine trees, Sebago Lake Village, Steep Falls, and Standish Corner. It’s also a lakeside community, as the town rests by the shoreline of Sebago Lake, a substantial recreational draw for Maine’s most populous county. Andy Lord, a 6-year broker with Landing Real Estate, says, “People like living in Standish for its proximity to Portland and the lakes.”
Diverse lakeside recreation
Standish proves itself to be as recreationally diverse as its environment allows. Johnson Field is a park in Sebago Lake Village with a baseball diamond, tennis court, playground and skate park. Next to the park is Mountain Division Trail, a 10-mile established hiking path built on an old railroad bed. The county is working to expand and develop new pavement to create a single continuous walking path from Sebago Lake to Cusco Bay in Portland, which will support pedestrian foot traffic in Standish. Field of Dreams Driving Range is within Standish to the south; residents can perfect their swing and get lessons from experienced golf instructors. Sebago Lake is the second largest in the state, stretching over 45 square miles; residents regularly cruise on the lake with motorboats and take the car ferry to the resort town of Frye Island or fish for lake trout and salmon.
Standish's Watchic Lake spans 448 acres, and its deepest point is 41 feet.

Rustic residences and agriculture
Standish is bursting with foliage and dense tree lines cut by thin, winding roads. Most subdivisions are within the villages, with scant homes on large woodsy lots in the outlying areas. Lord mentions, “Residents are free to use their land for farming; Standish is full of very distinctive areas and farming districts.” Architecture varies from cottages to classic Cape Cods, Colonial-Revivals and traditional styles. Single-family homes go for anywhere between $280,000 to $600,000.

Local eats and farm shopping
Local farm Randall Orchards is a consistent source of fresh apples, pears and pumpkins. They also sell homemade cider and host private events. Sebago Lake Village has dining options like pizza shop Walker’s Landing and Guff’s Grub and Pub, a diner serving burgers, subs and steaks.
