An older community with an emphasis on restoration and upliftment
If South Sumter could be defined in one word, Realtor Talmadge Tobias would use "upliftment." The city and local organizations like Sumter Habitat for Humanity have spent the last few years diligently working toward restoring the community, which lies 4 miles south of downtown Sumter. "There's been a lot of emphasis put on uplifting South Sumter," says Tobias, a retired City Manager who now works with Re/MAX Summit. Tobias worked for the city for 39 years and has 19 years of real estate experience. "The HOPE Center there has a lot of programs that have given a lot of opportunity for folks in South Sumter, and there are just so many people who care about the area's well-being. That's one of the things I love about Sumter--it's a community where people of all beliefs and backgrounds aren't afraid to come together and make the city the best it can be.” This momentum can be seen in the renovations and new construction that’s been taking place in the neighborhood. With places like the South HOPE Center, residents have access to resources that support youth, provide recreation and offer wrap-around services.

1950s ranch homes with room for renovation
South Sumter primarily developed in the 1950s, and the housing styles reflect this, including shingle-style cottages and ranch-style homes. Some of the neighborhood's homes fell into disrepair, so there have been investors working to renovate properties for personal use, to sell, or to rent. Prices for most homes range between $30,000 and $75,000. Some houses have been updated, with those prices ranging between $100,000 and $125,000. "The city is currently working with Sumter Habitat for Humanity to build some homes in the area," Tobias says. "That shows much of the community's efforts to make more quality, affordable housing in South Sumter."

The HOPE Center offers education and recreation

Some community events include easter egg hunts, church outreach events and school supply giveaways. The park is currently being upgraded to include a new playground, a splash park, upgraded athletic fields, and a pickleball court. The South HOPE Center, as Tobias notes, is one of the biggest things that have empowered the South Sumter Community. The center has after-school enrichment, youth classes, senior clubs, a wellness center, adult education and financial literacy classes. There is also a gymnasium and an aquatic center with a lap pool, wade pool and a lazy river.
