Milwaukee suburb with new homes and abundant amenities
The village of Sussex, Wisconsin, is among the many places in the U.S. that share their name with the South East English coast — a former kingdom known for its chalk cliffs, rolling farmland and pleasure piers. In fact, one of this village’s founders hailed from East Sussex. Today, this Milwaukee suburb of about 12,000 people continues to attract newcomers with quaint homes and amenities that keep the community active across all four seasons. And despite the growth, Sussex retains some of its rural character thanks in part to its proximity to farmlands and country roads. “We have a small town feel at the edge of the Milwaukee area, a beautiful park system and probably one of the best school systems in the state,” says Sussex village administrator Jeremy Smith. “We’re growing pretty consistently because of those features.”

Fast-growing community with new housing
With many homes built between the 1960s and the '90s, designs here include ranch-style houses, Colonial Revivals and Traditionals. And Sussex’s housing market continues to grow, with seven new subdivisions currently under development. Single-family homes here cost about $400,000 to $700,000, while condo and multi-family properties can cost anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000. Sussex’s median sales price is $540,000, which is nearly $100,000 higher than the national median and the median for all of Waukesha County.

Coffee and pub fare around Mammoth Springs
The area around Main Street and Waukesha Avenue is home to Mammoth Springs, a multi-use apartment and townhouse complex that shares the block with several businesses. Featuring a public terrace and a stone sign that reads “Village of Sussex,” staples here include cafes and restaurants serving classic American comfort foods, and a bar and grill establishment with live music and mini bowling. Some of these also double as convenient stopping points for cyclists due to their proximity to the Bugline Trail. The Piggly Wiggly is just one of the area's local grocery stores.

Sussex Village Park’s year-round amenities
The village has over a dozen parks and a civic center with a skating rink, and “They’re really well maintained," says Becca Werginz, the Pauline Haass Public Library’s technical services and communications manager. "And they do a good job of replacing them when they get old."
The 75-acre Sussex Village Park’s attractions include a splash pad, disc golf course, sports courts and a 14,000-square-foot all-inclusive playground. Dog owners enjoy letting their pets roam free here, while the snow-covered hills draw sledders during the winter months. The park’s walking paths connect to the 16-mile Bugline Trail, which cuts across Sussex and reaches neighboring communities like Lannon. The city is also currently undergoing a massive update of the park’s equipment, much of which is over five decades old.

Population growth and new industrial park

The village is also building a new industrial park to provide additional spaces for retail and manufacturing operations. No major medical institution exists in Sussex, but the village is about 9 miles from the ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
The village has seen consistent population growth, with the latest U.S. Census estimates showing Sussex growing by 15% since 2010. “It definitely has a nice, small-town feel, but it’s also developing really fast. There are always new developments coming up,” Werginz says. Waukesha Avenue connects Sussex to Waukesha, about 9 miles south. That same thoroughfare also leads to Interstate 94, which commuters take to travel to Milwaukee. The village is also over 20 miles from downtown Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
