Elevated riverside living in southern Maryland
Located on a peninsula in southern Maryland, less than 60 miles from Washington, D.C., Newburg offers resort-style living on the Potomac River. Ruth Mudd, a Realtor with Re/Max One and a long-time Newburg resident, says, “It’s one-third young families, one-third retirees and one-third second-home people. Several of the people with second homes are from D.C.” Waterfront homes with private docks line the banks of the Potomac River, and the Swan Point Yacht and Country Club is a defining attraction to the neighborhood. Residents enjoy an elevated waterside lifestyle, but neighbors also pride themselves on caring for their community. “I do the meal train, and if someone gets sick, the calendar fills up immediately,” Mudd says.

Golf, swim and fish in Newburg
The Swan Point Yacht and Country Club is Newburg’s crown jewel for outdoor recreation. “We have a beautiful pool overlooking the creek, the Osprey Bar, pickleball courts and tennis courts,” Mudd says. She emphasizes that golf is big in the community, adding, “They’re even out golfing in the rain.” Southern Park is a public park overlooking the Potomac River, where residents can face off on the basketball or tennis courts or cast a line in the river. Kids enjoy the park’s playground, and neighbors gather for a riverside lunch at the picnic tables. Paved nature trails wind throughout the neighborhood for immersive strolls through the forest. “There are bald eagles every day. We have wild turkeys and deer that are way too friendly because we feed them. I feel like I’m in a Disney movie sometimes,” Mudd jokes.

Seafood by the marina on Cobb Island
While there aren’t many restaurants or stores in the neighborhood, a few beloved eateries serve residents. Golfers can take a break to enjoy a salad or seasonal dish from The Point Grill at the Swan Point Yacht and Country Club, and the restaurant welcomes the public as well. Locals drive south to Cobb Island, at the tip of the neighborhood, for riverside classics like Captain John's Crab House, where they can order oysters, crabs and hush puppies. Scuttlebutt Restaurant and Marina maintains a casual coastal vibe, serving up crabcakes on the patio overlooking a marina full of sailboats. Cobb Island Market is a small grocery store that stocks fresh meat and produce, so residents don’t have to drive out of town for essential groceries. However, La Plata, which is about 20 miles north, is the nearest town with large supermarkets like Safeway and Giant and retailers like Target.

Summer concerts at Swan Point
The Swan Point Country Club hosts casual gatherings, like trivia and bingo nights, along with holiday parties. Non-members can still attend some events — they just pay a higher ticket price than members — so the whole neighborhood can gather for the Friday summer concert series and themed brunches.

State Route 301 heads to northern Virginia and D.C.
Rural roads meet with state routes, which feed into U.S. 301. Residents can merge onto Route 301 to drive north to the Charles County seat of La Plata, where they’ll find more stores and restaurants. It's a 55-mile drive north to Washington, D.C., and 85 miles northeast to Baltimore. Route 301 also curves west toward Virginia. “The 301 bridge is narrow, so some like to avoid it, but it’s definitely the fastest way to get to northern Virginia,” says Linda Grigsby, the town clerk for La Plata. As they merge onto the bridge, residents pass the Morgantown Generating Station, a power plant that ceased using coal in 2022 but continues to use natural gas and oil. This has also greatly reduced the use of the industrial train tracks that carried coal to the plant. Waterfront homeowners in Newburg enjoy access to the Potomac River and can boat from their docks to their neighbors’ riverside homes.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
