The Florida Governor's Mansion anchors the neighborhood

Largely a commercial and business district teeming with restaurants, nightclubs and cafes, Governor’s Walk is a hub of activity just blocks north of downtown Tallahassee. Historic homes in the neighborhood, which is one of the oldest in Florida’s capital, have been converted into museums, businesses and law firms. The most prominent home is the Florida Governor’s Mansion – hence the neighborhood’s name – a stunning two-story Greek Revival estate accentuated by majestic Corinthian columns. It was constructed in 1956 after the original structure became structurally unsound. “This is an active area that is convenient to downtown,” says Jacob Matthews, a manager at the local Enterprise Rent-A-Car. “It’s busy with a lot of traffic during the week, but for residents it quiets down in the evenings and on weekends.”

Innovative dishes and eclectic decor at Kool Beanz Cafe

It’s an easy walk from the neighborhood to restaurants and bars in downtown Tallahassee and just north in Lake Ella and Midtown. The funky and vibrant Kool Beanz Cafe is a popular lunch and dinner nook that's been serving the neighborhood for more than 25 years. The eclectic New American menu here changes daily, and the dessert menu is the brainchild of pastry chef Sylvia Gould, a James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist. A few blocks south, The Huntsman is a chic dining establishment with black leather booths, abstract art and a marble bar. The Huntsman’s New American menu is seasonal, with farm-to-table ingredients harvested in the Tallahassee metro area. Although there are a few bodegas and convenience stores in Governor’s Walk, residents must drive outside the neighborhood for big-box retailers and larger grocery stores. Publix sells groceries less than a mile away in Levy Park. Governors Square Shopping Mall is three miles away.

U.S. 27 bisects the neighborhood and connects with Gainesville

One of the more walkable neighborhoods in Tallahassee, residents of Governor’s Walk don’t necessarily need a car to get around. There are walking-distance businesses in every direction. StarMetro bus stops are easy to find on South Monroe St/U.S. 27, a north-south corridor which bisects the neighborhood. The roadway links with downtown and Gainesville to the south and the Georgia border to the north. U.S. Route 90 runs east-west through the neighborhood, eventually connecting with I-10. Tallahassee International Airport is 7 miles southwest. Florida State University is 1 mile west.

Nearby Lafayette Park has a playground and walking trails

There are many community spots for enjoying the Florida sunshine, including the historic Oakland Cemetery in the shadow of the Florida Governor’s Mansion. The Phillips Mausoleum here was built in the early 20th century by and for an eccentric Tallahassee architect who is said to have spent hours a day for years sitting inside the elaborate crypt. For a more family-oriented outdoor experience, Lafayette Park just east has tennis courts, a fitness trail, a playground and plenty of shade. Hiking trails with benches also ribbon through the park. A paved walkway circles Lake Ella, where wildlife watchers might see ducks, geese and turtles.
