Killearn Estates and Killearn Acres have a large local footprint

Killearn may not be a mirror image of its namesake village in the Scottish Lowlands, but this northeast Tallahassee neighborhood does share similarities: rolling hills, sparkling lakes and a landmark golf course. Two subdivisions here have a big neighborhood presence: Killearn Estates and Killearn Acres, each with its own homeowners association as well as parks, lakes and various amenities. Maclay Gardens State Park and the burgeoning Market District commercial corridor border the neighborhood, and schools are some of the best in the Tallahassee area. With proximity to downtown, numerous green spaces and destination shopping and dining, Killearn is a good fit for families on the go.

Maclay Gardens State Park has trails, a lake and azaleas

Maclay Gardens State Park and Killearn Estates subdivision face each other across Thomasville Road. Despite the busy-ness of Thomasville Road, the state park is a refuge for locals. “Inside the park it is totally different. It’s very quiet and serene,” says Kim Barnhill, chair of the Friends of Maclay Gardens Board of Directors. Biking the trails and paddling on Lake Hall are popular activities, says Barnhill. It’s also a top spot for weddings, and the park hosts monthly events. The azalea blooms in spring also bring crowds. Homeowners in Killearn Estates have access to 11 residents-only parks with varied amenities, including playgrounds, trails and boat launches. Use of the Killearn Estates pool requires an extra fee. Originally opened in 1967, the Killearn Country Club is closed for restoration and set to reopen in 2024 with a new clubhouse and restaurant and an improved golf course, which has hosted PGA and LPGA tournaments in the past.

Maclay Gardens holds monthly events

Maclay Gardens State Park hosts a variety of monthly events, from hikes and paddling excursions to food truck nights. The park’s signature event is “Moon Over Maclay,” which is a full-moon jazz concert. “About 1000 people come every year,” says Barnhill. “At the historic house, that people can tour, there is a great big grassy lawn that overlooks the lake. Jazz musicians set up on the porch of the house, and people can bring in food and drinks. It's a great night.” The Killearn Estates homeowners association hosts several events throughout the year, including the Independence Weekend Celebration and the Halloween Parade.

Pockets of brick ranch-style homes with porticos and traditional asymmetrical brick homes with hipped roofs, as well as townhouses and condos, are also in the mix.
