Enchanting historic streets near great schools and Midtown
Lafayette Park is a historic Tallahassee neighborhood with beautifully aged homes and lush landscaping that is within walking distance of restaurants and boutiques in Midtown. And though it’s quiet, Lafayette Park has a festive streak, with residents going all-out with Halloween decorations in October. Occasional neighborhood yard parties also draw crowds. “This is such a desirable area because it caters to people who like lots of activity and those who want a relaxing place to settle down,” says Jennifer Patty, a Realtor for 29 years with Bestsellers Realty. Streets are lined with Spanish-moss-draped live oaks that shade duplexes as well as million-dollar historic mansions. In this peaceful atmosphere, it’s easy to forget that Florida State University is just one mile away – and FSU football in the fall is a must.

Lafayette Park has indoor and outdoor amenities
The neighborhood’s namesake, Lafayette Park, is a beautiful outdoor space within the community. “That park is a nice little park with a walking trail and playground, but the focus is the gym with volleyball and a fitness center. They do art classes there. Clay and pottery,” says Mandy O’Callaghan, a Realtor with Clover Key Realty and a 25-year resident of Tallahassee. “It’s a cute little community center.” The community center also hosts neighborhood clubs and community gatherings. Kids can play on the large playground, and competitive locals can get active on the pickleball courts.

Boutiques and local eateries in nearby Midtown
Most homeowners have less than a mile walk to Midtown, which has a great selection of boutiques with facades that match the area’s historic character and restaurants that have outdoor seating. “Off Thomasville Road are nice restaurants and wine bars and coffee shops that people can walk to,” says O’Callagan. One of the most popular spots is Table 23, a 1920s home converted into a restaurant with a large patio shaded by live oaks. Folks love to come here on a sunny day or for a fun nighttime vibe. Izzy Pub & Sushi is known for its delicious Japanese food and drink. People catch their morning buzz at Lucky Goat Coffee Company. For groceries, Publix or Whole Foods are just a couple of miles away.

Halloween decorations are famous throughout the city
Neighbors like to commune for parties in this convivial neighborhood. “Beard Street is a famous street in Midtown with a huge Halloween celebration and people purposely go there because they go all out,” says O’Callaghan. Over-the-top house decorations are the Halloween season norm, but the vibe remains family friendly. Beyond Halloween, one homeowner is known for putting chairs in the yard and hosting a lawn party with neighbors bringing drinks and hanging out, say O’Callaghan, creating a fun community vibe.
Historic Southern homes
Residents enjoy the quiet nature of Lafayette Park, where gridded streets are removed from the Midtown foot traffic. Vibrant green lawns and charming historic homes also make relaxing easy. “The area is known for its stately historic homes, but people don’t have to buy a mansion to live here,” says Patty. Homeowners tend to be a mix of young professionals with families and retirees. For about $260,000, folks could find a renovated two-bedroom townhouse or a three-bedroom midcentury ranch-style with a large yard. Larger historic homes range from $500,000 to almost $900,000, including a Tudor mansion with a wrap-around driveway framed by large oaks and an elegant colonial revival with luxurious veranda and a sprawling lawn lined by trimmed hedges. Lafayette Park is also home to textbook examples of classical Southern architecture. The Brokaw-McDougall House, for example, is an 1856 Victorian mansion with a signature two-story porch overlooking elaborate landscaping.
