A quieter vibe near downtown Tallahassee
Midtown keeps pace with the amenities of downtown Tallahassee, though residents enjoy a more low-key vibe, removed from the urban core. “I don’t have to leave the area for anything,” says James Olmstead, a Midtown resident and manager of The Great Bicycle Shop in the neighborhood. He cites an abundance of local restaurants, retail staples and tree-covered streets as the area’s most attractive features. Homes often have suburban attributes, with grassy lawns and nearby parks, but the housing landscape is generally more diverse and affordable than neighborhoods farther east. Many residents work downtown or at one the local colleges. “There are a lot of downtown professionals that live in that area,” says Mandy O’Callaghan, a Realtor with Clover Key Realty and a 25-year Tallahassee resident. “A lot of lobbyists want to live in that area. Professors.” Midtown is also popular with families and retired couples.

The housing mix includes condos, townhomes, ranch-style and Millennial designs
Buyers in Midtown can find more affordable options than in nearby suburbs, as some midcentury builds sell in the $200,000s. Remodeled homes with three bedrooms typically range from $350,000 to more than $700,000 for brand-new constructions. The area has a staggered development history, diversifying the architectural landscape, though most homes were built between the 1950s and 70s. “Every home has its own character, every lot is a different size,” Olmstead says. Brick ranch-style homes are prevalent, as well as minimal traditional and Millennial designs. Condos and townhomes are also commonly seen, with prices ranging from $125,000 to $445,000. The neighborhood is evenly split between single-family homes and apartments, though many parts of Midtown have a quieter, almost suburban feel. An abundance of trees helps shelter the area from Tallahassee’s urban core.

Surprising sandwiches as Midtown Caboose
“While there’s plenty to do across Tallahassee, Midtown has a little bit of everything,” Olmstead says. Midtown Caboose is a popular local restaurant with a railroad theme known for inventive burgers and sandwiches. The menu takes some risks – the s’mores burger, for one – but diners enjoy the adventure of trying something new with each visit. Two shopping plazas – Capital Plaza and Miracle Plaza – sit across from each other along Thomasville Road, which cuts though Midtown. Recommended restaurants and businesses include Casa Grande Margarita & Cocina in Capital Plaza and 4 Rivers Smokehouse in Miracle Plaza, which is also home to a Whole Foods.
