A peaceful neighborhood in South Tampa with well-rated schools
The Gray Gables neighborhood of Tampa offers a slice of quiet residential life — like a miniature suburb in the city. “It’s a cute little neighborhood without cross traffic, so it’s a great spot for families. It's in a really good school district too,” says Realtor Nicole Alonso, who works with Century 21 List with Beggins and has 10 years of experience in the area. Although it's mostly calm, the neighborhood still appeals to those wanting to jazz up their lifestyle — trendy shopping districts nearby promise a lively night out, and the Gray Gables Neighborhood Association plans a year-round calendar of events.

Colonial Revivals, Craftsman houses and ranch-style homes in Gray Gables
West of downtown Tampa, Gray Gables is a residential community mostly composed of walkable streets of single-family houses. These have front lawns with enough space for landscaped garden beds, which often feature tropical ferns, palm trees and oaks draped with Spanish moss. The backyards are large enough for decks and patios. The neighborhood has architectural styles galore: ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and Craftsman houses. At the upper end of the market, Craftsman homes and Colonial Revivals range from $1 million to $1.4 million. Meanwhile, ranch-style homes range from $500,000 to $800,000. “The majority of South Tampa is not very affordable for most families, but there are some smaller older homes that allow more people to take advantage of the school system,” Alonso says.

Gray Gables is within walking distance of two eclectic retail areas: West Kennedy Boulevard to the north and Henderson Boulevard to the southeast. The area's diverse restaurants include the trendy SoHo Sushi, which serves platters of sushi rolls and sashimi. It's recommended to make reservations, especially during the restaurant's popular happy hours. The hip Tex-Mex spot Miguelitos Taqueria Y Tequila has brunch and Taco Tuesdays, while the upscale Olivia offers classic Italian dishes, a wine cellar and an elegant feel. “My standout is Olivia. It’s a really good restaurant and it’s close by,” Alonso says. Some unique local shops include Gaslight Antiques, which has three buildings chock full of furniture, and Vintage Wine Cellars, the place for wine tastings and bottles at all price ranges. To stock up on groceries, residents of Gray Gables can go to Trader Joe's, located about a mile southwest of the neighborhood.
