Highland Pines offers affordable homes in an established Tampa neighborhood

Highland Pines is a mixed-use neighborhood of attractively priced midcentury homes nestled into the urban communities of southeast Tampa. Initially developed in the 1960s, Highland Pines is home to a traditional neighborhood park, a contemporary skate park and an elementary school. The neighborhood is convenient to a pair of the city’s popular cultural and entertainment districts. “It’s very accessible to Ybor City and downtown Tampa,” says Karen Howell of Keller Williams Tampa Properties, who recently sold a home here.

Ranch-style homes on spacious lots highlight the housing options

Homes are concentrated in the center of the neighborhood. They are bordered by the Myrtle Hill Memorial Park cemetery to the north, while parks and industrial areas take up much of the south side. A collection of ranch-style homes offers ample yard space on streets often shaded by pines, palms and other native trees. Most homes have paved driveways, many offer carports, and a handful of newly-built contemporary homes feature attached garages. “What I noticed driving around is that the neighborhood was pretty well-kept,” Howell says. “There was pride in the property.” Prices typically range from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$200,000s, although new homes can sell for well over $300,000. “The prices are absolutely affordable for first-time homebuyers,” says Howell, who added that several homes have been bought by investors who rent them out because the neighborhood is stable. Flooding is not a factor, but wind damage is a risk during hurricane season from June through November.

Neighborhood park, skating facility offer plenty of recreation

Highland Pines Park features a playground, basketball and tennis courts and a multi-purpose field. Football and cheerleading are highlights of the organized activities available to neighborhood youth. Skatepark of Tampa is a popular destination. The contemporary indoor setup is open daily to skateboarders, roller skaters, inline skaters and scooters. BMX bikers are welcome at designated times. SPoT, as it is known to locals, hosts contests and events regularly, including the annual Tampa Pro. DeSoto Park is an amenities-filled waterfront green space along McKay Bay about 3 miles from the neighborhood. The McKay Bay Nature Park offers nature trials and bird-watching.

Elementary school is in the neighborhood

Young students don’t have to leave the neighborhood to attend school. Oak Park Elementary, rated C-plus by Niche, is adjacent to Highland Pines Park. Older students can attend Greco Middle, a C-rated school, and Blake High, a B-plus school with a campus on the Hillsborough River. Its School of the Arts is a featured academic offering among the institution’s magnet programs.

Restaurants and stores are located nearby

Nearby shopping and dining options can be found along 50th Street on the neighborhood’s east side. Brocato’s Sandwich Shop is a popular stop with an outdoor café that has been a Tampa staple since 1948. A Dollar General and a Save A Lot grocery store are located along the corridor. Coco’s at 40th Street Restaurant is a highly rated eatery on the other side of the neighborhood. Contemporary restaurants and bars can be found in the Ybor City Historic District less than 10 minutes away.

Buses provide access to downtown Tampa hospitals

Hillsborough County buses run regularly along several neighborhood streets, providing access to local points of interest, including downtown. Residents can take the bus to pair of downtown medical centers – Tampa Hospital and HCA Florida South. Interstate 4 is just minutes from the neighborhood. It provides convenient access to Tampa International Airport about 10 miles away.
