Cul-de-sacs close to Raymond James Stadium
Across Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and one block north of Raymond James Stadium – home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – sits bustling Plaza Terrace. Though it’s home to the St. Joseph’s Hospital medical campus, this neighborhood offers several cul-de-sacs lined with colorful one-floor residences and tropical foliage. “West Tampa is really growing in popularity right now because it’s close to downtown, close to the airport, close to shopping and dining districts,” says RE/MAX Realtor Lara Manrique, who is individually in the top 1 percent of all Realtors in Greater Tampa. “It’s a great area for investors and first-time buyers looking for a bargain on an urban home with a suburban feel.”
A mix of vibrant ranch-style residences near St. Joseph’s
Homes in Plaza Terrace were primarily built in the 1950s and ‘60s. Many are ranch-style homes set on concrete slabs and driveways. Exteriors are often limestone, stucco or brick exteriors painted in bright beachy hues. However, a few one-floor residences lend themselves to mid-century moden architecture. “Well-priced homes are going to sell fast here, sometimes above the asking price,” Manrique says. Homes in the neighborhood range from around $200,000 on the low end for a small fixer-upper to around $550,000 for the rare high-end, new construction. “As the development along the Hillsborough River continues to creep west, this area is going to become increasingly popular with buyers and investors.”

Luxury shopping and a Fresco y Más within 3 miles
The area is known for its Latin influence, apparent at the nearby grocery store, Fresco y Más, a supermarket chain founded in 2016 to serve Hispanic communities throughout South Florida. Mr. Empanada is a simple eatery with creative empanadas like pizza, crabmeat, and exceptional Cuban sandwiches. Open seven days a week until at least 10 p.m., Adriana’s Mexican Bar & Grill is hidden away behind a modest storefront in a strip mall. The tacos are great, the margaritas are strong, and the music is said to be loud. On Dale Mabry Highway is Walter’s Crossing, home to Target, Walmart and the popular Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux. High-end designer brands can be found at International Plaza and Bay Street. The indoor mall sits next to Tampa International Airport, 3 miles west, and offers a mix of luxury stores like Tiffany & Co. and Burberry, as well as nationally recognized upscale dining spots like seafood restaurant Ocean Prime. The Publix at Hillsboro Plaza is a local favorite for stocking up on groceries and essentials.

A large stretch of Al Lopez Park frames Plaza Terrace to the west
The Plaza Terrace community comes together at Al Lopez Park, which is situated on 132 acres along the neighborhood's western border. Perfect for joggers and dog walkers, the park stretches for almost a dozen blocks and features a 1.2-mile interior loop that circles around a freshwater pond and through various wooded areas. Visitors say it’s the ultimate Pokémon Go location, thanks to all the shade and open space. Another plus for pet parents is the dog park, which offers two different sides – one for big dogs and one for small dogs. There is a scenic pier for fishing and benches to rest and gaze out over the peaceful waters and the lush foliage on the other side – just watch out for alligators. Also located at the park is the Cordelia B. Hunt Center, a community gathering place that features a craft room, computer lab and fitness center.
Al Lopez Park has numerous activities for the whole family.

Tampa International Airport is only a 10 to 15 minute drive
“Getting around Tampa from this area is no problem because it’s so close to everything,” Manrique says. U.S. Route 92 runs along the western border of the neighborhood, heading south toward MacDill Air Force Base before turning west over Old Tampa Bay toward Clearwater and St. Petersburg. Twelve blocks south of the Plaza Terrace is I-275, which connects to the peninsula via Howard Franklin Bridge and ultimately links the entire region. For getting downtown, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard intersects with North Florida Avenue and North Tampa Street, which run south into the city. HART busses service Plaza Terrace along N Himes Avenue, West Hillsborough Avenue and West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The neighborhood houses St. Joseph’s Hospital, the second-largest medical facility in the city. Tampa International Airport is about 4 miles from home, so air traffic noise may be a concern.
