Suburb located near downtown Taunton and the Three Mile River
South of Taunton’s quaint, historic downtown, the suburbs of Somerset sprawl out between the branches of the Taunton River and the Three Mile River. Some waterfront dining and recreation can be found on either side, connected by streets that range from tightly gridded to wide and winding. “Land-wise, Taunton is the largest city in Massachusetts,” says Cyndi Arpin, a Taunton native and Realtor with Brownstone Realty Group. “So closer to downtown, it definitely feels very congested and urban, but if you go even a mile out, it starts to get pretty rural pretty quickly. You’ll go from lots of multifamily homes to lots of single-family homes.” That diversity of housing is fully on display in Somerset, where duplexes mingle with Colonial Revivals and manufactured homes in 55-plus communities.

Midcentury single-family homes, new townhouses and 55-plus communities
Although many of Somerset’s homes were built in the 1960s, some predate the 20th century. Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and Dutch Colonials harken back to the area’s colonial history, with simple ranch-style and split-level homes scattered about in between. Close to the heart of town, these houses cluster on wide, flat streets flanked by sidewalks and dotted with trees. Moving towards the neighborhood's edges, lots tend to be larger and more densely wooded with mature trees. Single-family homes start at roughly $270,000 and can ask for up to $750,000 for homes on multi-acre lots. Multifamily properties such as duplexes and even triplexes tend to list between $300,000 and $800,000, while individual townhouse or condo units start around $180,000 in older complexes and climb to $500,000 for new constructions. Manufactured homes in 55-plus communities like Leisurewoods are priced from $140,000 to $310,000.
Small cottages line the streets with triple deckers, and can feature small strip lawns.
Smaller properties like bungalows throughout Somerset offer an affordable living option.

Dine on the Taunton River at Riverhouse
Hannaford on U.S. Highway 44 satisfies grocery needs. While there isn’t much other shopping in the area, folks can head to Taunton Depot along Massachusetts Route 140 about 2 to 5 miles away to peruse national retailers such as Target, Kohl’s, Petco, Home Depot and T.J. Maxx. Local businesses and restaurants also line Main Street near Taunton Green, though there are plenty of eateries in Somerset, including Riverhouse. This seafood and steak restaurant remains a local favorite, providing patio views of the Taunton River with a side of margarita flights and live music. Kinfolk’s BBQ specializes in all things smoked and fried, served with Southern comfort foods, including cornbread and collard greens. For New England specialties such as lobster rolls and fried clams, Frates Drive-In is the go-to. This retro outpost is full of zany selfie props like life-size Elvis and cow statues.

Memorial Park in Somerset invites you to enjoy an afternoon out in the sunshine.
Memorial Park is due for a refresh based on community input
Somerset is home to some of Taunton’s most beloved and well-utilized outdoor spaces, including Memorial Park. The 25-acre park was originally founded to honor city residents who fought in World War I, with later additions to commemorate the Taunton Fire Department and area resident Peter A. Gay, a victim of the 9/11 attacks. Today, the park is much more than just a well-landscaped green space with remembrance gardens and memorial pillars. It’s the site of events such as the annual Cultural Fair, plus the playground, walking path, basketball courts and baseball field along 1st Street are all considered part of the park. A current revitalization project is set to redesign and refresh the park based on public input, promising new amenities in the near future. Gertrude M. Boyden Wildlife Refuge allows residents to escape into the forest and be immersed in nature. Dogs can roam the park’s rugged trails, which hug the Three Mile River. Indoor recreation options include the roller rink at Forrest Family Fun Center, the Edge Indoor Skatepark and the Old Colony YMCA Taunton Branch.
All roads lead to Taunton High
Numerous Taunton Public Schools serve the Somerset area. Mulcahey Elementary, Edmund Hatch Bennett Elementary and H. H. Galligan Elementary all score a C-plus from Niche. “There are a lot of elementary schools, which is nice because you can get more of a community feel since each one is relatively small,” Arpin says. John F. Parker Middle and Joseph H. Martin Middle also earn C-plus Niche grades, while Benjamin Friedman Middle receives a B-minus. These schools funnel into Taunton High, which is B-rated and offers a culinary career technical education pathway. Students in the program get hands-on experience through the Tiger Den Café, where they prepare breakfast and lunch for purchase by the public and school staff.

Commute to Providence or take a day trip to Boston
Taunton’s downtown district surrounding Taunton Green is roughly 3 miles or less going north, while Providence is about 20 miles or less heading west via U.S. Highway 44. Massachusetts Route 24 is east of the neighborhood and connects to Interstate 495 to the north, putting residents roughly 39 to 42 miles from Boston. “It’s almost halfway between Providence and Boston,” says Kathleen Humphrey, a broker and owner of Humphrey Realty Group who has sold homes in Taunton. “You’ll find a lot of people also work in Norton, Raynham and Easton, since there are industrial parks nearby.” Although Somerset is a car-dependent area, there are a handful of Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority bus stops, including one at Hannaford and others along Weir Street, Highland Street and Presbey Court. Morton Hospital is located in Taunton’s city center, and Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is in Providence.
