An isolated, rural setting, but with plenty to do in town
Surrounded by farmlands and crop fields, Tecumseh brings a small-town feel to the rural setting. The town’s parks, local restaurants and longstanding annual traditions mean that residents have plenty to do throughout the year, while enjoying an isolated location away from the busyness of Michigan cities like Ann Arbor and Detroit. While locals have everything they need in the community, Adrian is another town not far away, offering more commercial options just 10 miles south of Tecumseh.
From historic Nationals to recently built New Traditionals
Tecumseh’s residential streets offer historic Nationals built in the late 1800s and early 1900s alongside condos and ranch-style homes. Sidewalks line the streets, where pedestrians can stop to admire the gardens outside the historic homes. Builds become more recent fanning out from the center of the city, where subdivisions on the far south and north sides feature New Traditionals on streets lined with younger saplings. The older homes tend to sell between $180,000 and $330,000, while the New Traditionals range from $400,000 to $640,000.
Kayaking, golfing and biking around Tecumseh
Indian Crossing Trails Park sits along Globe Mill and Standish ponds, where a creek connects the bodies of water. “There’s a little kayak-canoeing rental place on the Globe Mill Pond,” says Zack Bock, local broker with Front Street Realty. “You can paddleboard, canoe and fish.” On land, there are 3 miles of trails where people can walk and bike. The Pit might be a strange name for a park, but the lake is a popular swimming spot, which people can access from the beach. There’s also sand volleyball and a playground here. Tecumseh Golf Club offers a full green, and it is the only private course in the county. The Kiwanis Trail starts in Adrian and continues for 12 miles before ending on Tecumseh’s south side. The paved trail is open for walking, biking and rollerblading.
Tecumseh's local schools and dual enrollment options
Tecumseh Acres Early Learning Center receives a B-plus from Niche and serves kindergarten through third grade students. For fourth through eighth grade, students head to B-rated Tecumseh Middle School. B-plus-rated Tecumseh High School allows its junior and senior students to enroll in Lenawee Intermediate Learning Center TECH Center for industrial, engineering, health science and business courses.
Driving around Tecumseh and beyond to Adrian
Chicago Boulevard, Main Street and Evans Street are the main thoroughfares through Tecumseh. Just east of the city, Minnesota Route 52 connects people with downtown Adrian, about 10 miles south. ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital is about halfway between the two cities, 6 miles south of Tecumseh. For air travel, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is about 44 miles away.
Local diners, breweries and grocery stores
Right in the center of town, City Limits Diner and Pancake House is exactly what it sounds like. The red vinyl booths and street signs on the wall create a classic diner feel, along with a menu featuring pancakes, omelets, burgers and hot dogs. Tecumseh Brewing Co. offers beer flights and live music on Saturday evenings. For groceries, residents can frequent Busch’s Fresh Food Market or Jerry’s Market. “Both of them are local, smaller grocery stores,” Bock says. “Busch’s is larger than Jerry’s, but you can still get everything you need at Jerry’s.” For additional options, Adrian has a Meijer, Aldi and Walmart.
Tecumseh's summer concerts and fall festivals
On the third Thursday of the month from June to September, Music in the Park invites people to hear free concerts at the wooden bandstand in Adams Park. For over 30 years, Appleumpkin has been Tecumseh’s fall festival. The city sets up carnival rides and games and offers helicopter rides over the town. “All the shops in town are open,” Bock says. “And there are crafts lining the streets.” Plenty of food trucks come out for the event, and there’s also an antique street fair.
