A shopping and dining area with Old West influences in Temecula
Situated just minutes from the sprawling vineyards of Southern California Wine Country, Old Town Temecula serves as a shopping and dining district with a rustic feel. Wooden boardwalks, vintage streetlamps and exposed brick storefronts evoke the feel of a 19th-century Western town, while arched doorways, stucco walls and terracotta details add Spanish and European influences. Though it’s a popular place to visit, a passionate community of residents calls Old Town Temecula home all year round. “The warmth of the people makes it so special,” says Cathie Kong, a real estate specialist with Reliable Realty, who has lived in the Temecula Valley for over 20 years. “People say hi to you when you go the post office, you can be at a cafe, and someone you don’t even know will buy you a coffee; everyone just gives back so much to the community.”

Country bars, boutique shopping and independent restaurants
The stores along Main and Old Town Front streets feature a blend of rustic, Old West and Mediterranean-inspired architecture, with weathered wood facades, wrought iron balconies and stone accents. People come to Old Town because of its restaurant, bar, and music scene. “The Gambling Cowboy steakhouse is the best in Temecula, in my opinion, and Goat and Vine serves amazing pizza and salads,” Kong says. “Swing Inn is the oldest restaurant in town, and Dean Norris from Breaking Bad bought it and added a dinner menu.” The Coin-Op Game Room adds an arcade to the nightlife scene, and Stampede is the West Coast’s largest country music venue for dancing, drinking and bull riding. Antique sellers, a candy shop and second-hand stores are among the many locally run businesses, while big-box options, such as Target and Vons, are 1 mile away at Temecula Town Center.

From 1800s homes to new residential developments past Pujol
Though limited housing is available in Old Town Temecula, a few pockets of homes sit outside of the shopping and dining district. “A lot of 19th century homes on Pujol Street have sold and are going to be redeveloped into condos,” Kong says. “There’s also a development past Pujol that will be roughly 1,700 single-family homes and condos that will bring a bunch of people here for its walking proximity to Old Town.” Architecture typically consists of ranch-style builds and small, single-story cottages with attached garages, stucco facades and tile roofs. Single-family prices tend to fall in the $500,000 and $600,000 ranges. One-to-three-bedroom apartments are for rent at complexes like Foothills at Old Town Apartments.

The city throws plenty of unique events throughout the year. The Balloon & Wine Festival brings in nearly 40,000 visitors for hot air balloon rides and wine tastings, and the Temecula Rod Run is one of the West’s oldest car shows. During the winter, the town puts up an outdoor ice rink, and dozens of vendors gather for a weekly farmers market in the Temecula Wine & Beer Garden parking lot. Many other attractions bring in visitors, including the old 1800s jail, where Old West outlaws were once detained, according to local legend.

Sam Hicks Monument Park has a playground, green space and a gazebo, all adjacent to the Temecula Valley Museum of local history. Golf has been a significant draw for decades, with nearby courses including Legends, Cross Creek and Temecula Creek golf clubs.

Access to the 15 freeway and major Southern California hubs
Though the area is highly walkable, residents often drive around the greater valley. The Temecula Valley Freeway along Interstate 15, known as “the 15” colloquially, borders the neighborhood to the east and leads to larger Southern California cities. San Diego and Orange County are around 60 miles away in opposite directions, and many locals make these commutes daily for work. Riverside Transit Agency buses stop throughout Old Town, and the Ontario and San Diego international airports are both within about 60 miles.
