Idle Creek Golf Community is Terre Haute’s only golf course neighborhood
Idle Creek Golf Community is a secluded residential escape less than 15 minutes from the heart of Terre Haute. Set around a namesake golf course, it’s the city’s only golf community and one of its most affluent neighborhoods. Custom homes in a park-like setting, easy access to the golf course and proximity to some of the city’s best schools are major draws for homebuyers. Idle Creek also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score. “It’s a golf cart community that is open and friendly and very active, like biking, walking the dog, meeting and greeting with your neighbors that you know and don’t know,” says Carrie Smith, a resident of 22 years and Realtor with Gibson Real Estate.
New traditional homes in a still-growing community
Established in 1996, Idle Creek offers a serene setting with large lots and neat landscaping. Sidewalks are lined with new traditional homes, some with Colonial or Craftsman style. Most homes sport attached garages and spacious backyards with enough room for pools, playsets or outdoor entertainment. Some houses have views of the green or, even more coveted, views of Patton Lake. Real estate prices in Idle Creek run much higher than elsewhere Terre Haute: The city’s median home price is about $160,000, while the median price in Idle Creek is nearly $500,000. Prices start around $375,000 for homes under 3,000 square feet and those in need of updates, but most four-bedroom homes range from $450,000 to $650,000. As Idle Creek continues to grow, new homes are often larger and fleshed out with pools and four-car garages, typically going for $700,000 to $1 million. Lots are also for sale, ranging from $40,000 to $150,000, depending on size.
Hitting the links Idle Creek Golf Course
The neighborhood's 18-hole, par-71 golf course sprawls across the rolling terrain. After hitting the links, golfers unwind at the clubhouse, open to members and the public. Yearly household membership dues are about $1,600. Residents walk and jog on the neighborhood sidewalks, and it’s common to see golfers and homeowners cruise along the golf cart paths that wind through the community. For more parks and recreation, residents head about 6 miles into Terre Haute to access green spaces like Dobbs Park. In addition to a playground, fishing pond and 3 miles of hiking trails, the park features a nature center and a Native American Museum, which highlights Terre Haute’s indigenous peoples and hosts monthly educational programs. Terre Haute Casino Resort debuted in 2024 and is less than 10 minutes away.
Kids can attend Riley Elementary and Honey Creek Middle
Another top draw for Idle Creek is access to some of Vigo County School Corporation’s best schools. Kids may attend Riley Elementary School, which receives a B-minus from Niche, before heading to Honey Creek Middle School, B, and Terre Haute South Vigo High School, B. While the neighborhood is zoned for Riley Elementary, parents can enroll their kids in any school so long as they arrange transportation. “There are a lot of doctors coming to the hospital who’ll tour with me,” Smith says. "They realize they want to be in this school district, and if they can arrange transportation, then they’ll end up in Idle Creek."
Dining at Rick’s Garage inside the neighborhood
For groceries and errands, residents are within a 10-minute drive of Aldi, Meijer and Walmart on Terre Haute’s east side. “You can get anywhere in Terre Haute within 15 minutes,” Smith says. She recommends local restaurants like Umi Grill, Bar Bosco and J. Ford’s Black Angus, all in the heart of Terre Haute. Rick’s Garage, the clubhouse restaurant and sports bar, “grew to be this giant party place,” Smith says. “They open the garage doors and have these huge screen TVs. Every Friday night from spring to fall, they have a band play and it brings people in. It’s busy all the time.”
Events at home and Terre Haute’s Balloon Festival
Idle Creek holds numerous events throughout the year, from live music at Rick’s Garage to Easter egg hunts and fundraisers for the local colleges and universities. One of Terre Haute’s most popular events is the Balloon Festival. Hot air balloons soar to the skies during this two-day event, which also features live music, food and vendors. A kids zone provides free entertainment for youngsters, while athletes can participate in a 5k run. After the sun sets, the hot air balloons take flight in an evening glow against the night sky.
Quick access to State Route 641
The community’s secluded nature means there’s no public transportation in the area. Eldridge Road is the only way in and out. State Route 641 is within a few miles and connects to Interstate 70, one of Indiana’s main highways. Terre Haute Regional Hospital is less than 10 minutes away on the south side of the city.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
