A historic commercial district in the midst of revitalization

Three streets—Lafayette Avenue, North 13th Street and Maple Avenue—converge in Terre Haute, Indiana, to form 12 points. In the center is Gold Medal Plaza and a district aptly named “12 Points,” a growing arts and entertainment hub less than 2 miles from Indiana State University and Downtown event centers. “12 Points has done so much. They’re trying to bring it back,” says Cy Marlow, owner and founder of LJ Michaels Inc., a real estate firm based in Terre Haute. Thanks to the 12 Points Revitalization Initiative, a local nonprofit with a 5-year plan to revamp the neighborhood, historic sites like Harmony Hall, once home to the Banks of the Wabash Chorus, are in the midst of renovation. In September 2024, the district opened a public market with five restaurants—everything from soul food to artisan coffee—and future plans include improved access to healthcare, a farmers market and annual holiday celebrations. “Terre Haute, like any other city, has its issues. We have all of the negative, dark side of the world, but we have so many organizations trying to help. The boys and girls club, etc. I’m very grateful to be in a town that cares,” says Marlow.

Restaurants and boutiques near Gold Medal Plaza

Most of the commercial activity in Twelve Points is centered to the west of the neighborhood near Gold Medal Plaza and a new street sign that reads “Welcome to Historic 12 Points.” Nearby food options include the neighborhood’s new public market, home to the first brick-and-mortar location of Anna’s Hands Soul Food and Catering, and Mis Tres Potrillos Mexican Restaurant Bar and Grill, which has a colorful atmosphere with casual wooden tables. There’s also a growing number of boutiques like the Madam’s Curiosities antique store and Son’s Spice Co. North up Lafayette Avenue, over Lost Creek and past local chains like Coffee Cup Family Restaurant is Plaza North, where residents will find larger stores like Menards, Trader Buck’s and Kroger for groceries next door.

Quaint front porches, historic homes and compact lots

Some of the earliest homes in Twelve Points date back to the 1890s, and the area was declared a historic district in 2005. Most properties were built between 1900 and 1925, and styles are reflective of the early 20th century: there are bungalows with quaint front porches and two-story cottages on wide, sidewalk-lined streets. Investment properties can range from around $30,000 to $60,000, whereas renovated historic homes generally fall between $100,000 and $150,000. Since many homes were built during the days of horses and street cars, attached garages are uncommon. Pickup trucks park in the street, under covered porticos or at the end of long driveways dividing compact lots.

Dual enrollment, world languages and Career Clusters at Terre Haute North Vigo High

Spring 2021 marked Deming Elementary School’s transition into Deming Early Learning Center, which has full and half-day programs for area preschoolers. Kids in Kindergarten through fifth grade can now attend Terre Town Elementary, which has a B-minus grade from Niche, before moving on to Otter Creek Middle, which has a C. The B-minus-rated Terre Haute North Vigo High offers dual enrollment options via Indiana State University; the college’s main campus is less than 2 miles south. The world language department includes options like Chinese, French and Latin, and there are also a dozen Career Clusters with pathways in health sciences, hospitality and more. Along with ISU, Marlow points to other institutions of higher ed in the area: there’s Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, about 5 miles from the neighborhood, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where undergraduates can choose from more than 20 STEM majors.

A playground in Coy Park and annual events in Collett Park

There’s a small playground and basketball court in Coy Park, which sits at Twelve Points eastern edge, but Collett Park offers more amenities farther west. Found at the corner of 7th and Maple, the 21-acre expanse is home to a stone pavilion built in the late 19th century. Residents can enjoy horseshoe and tennis courts and look forward to “Old Fashion Day” in the fall, a festival that’s been going strong for the last three decades. There’s face painting, woodcarving demonstrations and live bands scheduled over the course of an afternoon. The 12 Points Car Show—also based out of Collett Park—typically occurs in July. “The parks are very nice and well kept up by the city and county,” says Marlow, adding, “We have more parks than most of the other communities in the area have.”

First Fridays and a brand-new Vigo County Library

The 12 Points Revitalization nonprofit has helped bring a series of events to the district. There’s First Friday at the beginning of every month, an evening complete with tarot readings, food trucks and opportunities for local businesses and craftspeople to promote their wares. According to Berkshire Hathaway Realtor Andrew Southard, the “flourishing” arts district will soon be home to a second branch of the Vigo County Library; locals can expect a rooftop terrace, a teen room with a secret entrance and even an outdoor splash pad. Next to the district’s brand-new public market, residents will also find a Maker’s Studio; it hosts children’s art classes and camps, and locals can reserve the space for family reunions and other private parties. There’s a small railroad museum open on the weekends in the neighborhood’s southernmost corner and plenty of opportunities to attend concerts and ISU basketball games at the Hulman Center closer to Downtown.

Lafayette Avenue public transit

Twelve Points is just 2 miles from Downtown Terre Haute. Although most residents rely on their own cars, there’s also a public transit line that travels south along Lafayette Avenue, past large-scale employers like Union Hospital, on the way to popular downtown destinations like the Children’s Museum, the Larry Bird Museum and Swope Art Museum. Bus lines also run north along Lafayette to reach the Plaza North Shopping Center. It takes less than an hour and a half to drive the 80 miles to Indianapolis, a straight shot along Interstate 70. The larger city also has an extensive international airport; there are close to 50 nonstop flight options to choose from.
