Straddling the Texas border, Texarkana, Arkansas, offers plenty of outdoor attractions and affordable home options. The city was settled in the 1800s and has steadily grown into an industrial and transportation hub of just under 30,000. However, the city has plenty of indoor and outdoor entertainment options and attracts people due to lower property taxes.
“Texarkana is such a pretty area,” says Claudia Snow, a sales associate at Century 21 All Points Realty and a lifelong resident of the area. “We are a continuation of the piney woods, so it's very green. We have lots of lakes and rivers so it’s a great place for hunters and a great place for families to be outdoors.”
The border line between Texarkana, TX and Texarkana, AR runs straight through the city.

More affordability across the Arkansas line
The median price for homes in Texarkana is $187,000, far below the national median. Home styles in the area include ranch, bungalow, Craftsman-style, and New Traditional. Brian Henry, a real estate associate at Re/Max Preferred, says the biggest reason people move into the Arkansas side is lower taxes. Arkansas has a lower property tax rate than Texas. While there is income tax in the state, Texarkana residents are exempt. Henry said that homeowner’s associations are not a significant factor in Texarkana, saying, “that sort of thing is frowned upon in these parts.”

Visible industrial and medical industry
Heavy industry is Texarkana's primary economic engine. The Goodyear Tire plant, located in the southeastern part of the city, employs over 1,800 people. Several logistics companies, such as FedEx and XPO, maintain warehouses off Interstate 49.
CHRISTUS Health is one of the area’s top employers and maintains St. Michael Hospital, north of Interstate 30, and an emergency room downtown in Texas. CHRISTUS does have a clinic on the Arkansas side. Smaller clinics are also in the area.
The residents of Texarkana can go to Christus Health whenever they need to see the doctor.

Two school districts serve the area
The Texarkana Arkansas School District serves the area, which has nine schools. The district maintains a C+ grade on Niche. Genoa Central School District also serves a portion of the city and has an A-minus on Niche. The University of Arkansas maintains a small branch campus in the city with a B-plus rating on Niche. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock also offers degree programs at the branch campus in Texarkana.

Rodeos, classic cars and dog parks
Since 1945, Texarkana has been home to the Four States Fair and Rodeo. The event lasts 10 days and features a demolition derby, games, rides and rodeo performances.
The city is also home to the Four States Auto Museum, which features a rotating display of classic cars and memorabilia. Just north of the fairgrounds is Bobby Ferguson Park, which features two jogging trails, playgrounds, and a Fishing Pier. Jefferson Park, near downtown Texarkana, has a fenced, off-leash dog park.
Summers in Texarkana can get hot and humid but usually don’t get over 100 degrees. Winters are generally short but can be cold and wet.

Dining downtown and shopping options across the border
Texarkana’s Rail Yard Entertainment District is a five-block downtown area allowing public consumption of alcoholic beverages in approved containers. Several bars and eateries are located in the district, including The Hideout bar, TLC Burgers and Fries and Mexican restaurant Zapatas. Other dining options outside the Rail Yard include Naaman’s BBQ on North State Line Avenue, which serves barbecue dishes, steaks and fried catfish.
Retail options, including Walmart and Albertsons, are located on North State Line Avenue, but a wider selection of retail stores can be found in Texas. Boutique shopping options are available on the Arkansas side, with smaller shops in the Rail Yard District.
TLC Burgers and Fries is a local favorite for lunch or dinner.

New airport terminal in Texarkana
Texarkana Regional Airport is in Arkansas and opened a new terminal building in 2024. Currently, American Airlines only serves the airport with service to Dallas- Fort Worth International, but the airport is courting more options.
Amtrak’s Texas Eagle Service stops at Texarkana Union Station between Chicago, Illinois, and San Antonio, Texas. The T-line bus has eight routes between the two cities. I-30 provides highway connections to Little Rock and Dallas, while I-49 connects the city to Shreveport, Louisiana.
