History and heritage in Thibodaux
Thibodaux is known as the “Queen City of Lafourche,” and a stroll around the downtown area puts the crown jewels on full display. The Louisiana city is the seat of Lafourche Parish and home to 15,000 residents. Bayou Lafourche drifts along the northern edge of Historic Downtown Thibodaux, bordering a haven of locally owned shops and restaurants. Balconies with ceiling fans and embellished cast-iron railings evoke the French Quarter in New Orleans, but with a much mellower vibe. “It’s a relatively quiet part of town for being in the center of Thibodaux,” says Danielle Stein, executive director for Thibodaux Main Street, Inc. “Just outside the Main Street District, you’ll see homes where families have lived for decades. It’s the heart of this community, what a downtown traditionally is.”

Cajun seafood specialties at Spahr’s Downtown
Most of downtown Thibodaux’s hottest restaurants pepper the streets near Bayou Lafourche, between Jackson Street and Canal Boulevard. The Willow Café is the place to grab a coffee or a sweet treat with friends, and the sandwich menu also makes it an appealing spot for lunch. Spahr’s Downtown is one of three locations for the local chain, known for authentic Cajun seafood dishes like blackened drum and crawfish stew. Cozy, burnished-wood-and-exposed-brick interiors welcome diners to Fremin’s, an upscale eatery specializing in Cajun twists on classic American and Italian dishes. Seasonal ingredients infuse the cocktail list and creative fare at Cinclare Southern Bistro. Women can dress for a night out with clothes from Sugar Boutique, and Johnny’s Men’s Shop stocks footwear and casual apparel. Thrift stores and antique shops line up along Jackson Street a short walk away. For groceries, Rouses Market is right across Bayou Lafourche on Canal Boulevard.

Thibodeauxville Fall Festival
Big Boy’s Main Street Cook Off draws dozens of local chefs to downtown Thibodaux on the second Friday in November. The annual event showcases Cajun cuisine and leads into the Thibodeauxville Fall Festival, which takes place the following day. At the Fall Festival, revelers enjoy live music, wander through arts and crafts booths, sample regional cuisine at the food court and watch the rubber duck race on Bayou Lafourche. The Thibodaux Fireman’s Fair spans four days in early May and has served as the annual fundraiser for the city’s volunteer fire department for over 130 years.
Shotgun-style and Craftsman homes
With commercial activity taking up so much downtown real estate, inventory is scarce for single-family homes. Residential houses make up just over half of the property mix, and many historic builds have been converted into retail or restaurant space. “We have quite a few [buildings] listed in the National Register of Historic Places, both commercial and residential,” Stein says. Most homes date to the early 1900s, but some multi-family units were built within the last 25 years. Townhouses, single-story cottages, Craftsman- and shotgun-style homes sell for $200,000 to $400,000 on average. Larger historic or renovated houses sell in the $400,000 to $700,000 range, particularly if they’re situated on lots measuring over a quarter-acre.

Cruises with Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center
Chaisson Park is a cubbyhole of green space tucked into the corner of Jackson and West 10th Streets. A picnic pavilion, swing set and small merry-go-round sit in the center, ringed by grass and a walking path. The Thibodaux Municipal Pool is a mile from the historic downtown area and offers general swimming sessions six days a week throughout June and July. At Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, visitors embark on boat tours of Bayou Lafourche and gather for weekly meetings to celebrate their heritage. “Every Monday, people get together [at the Center] and speak French to keep our Cajun language going,” Stein says.

Good Earth Transit to Gouaux Hall
The neighborhood’s primary thoroughfare, Canal Boulevard, was once an actual canal connecting Bayou Lafourche to Bayou Terrebonne in the south. Today, it’s a segment of Louisiana Highway 20 that leads south to Bayou Cane, 13 miles away, and Houma, 16 miles away. Highway 20 intersects with U.S. Route 90, which offers the quickest route to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, 47 miles away. Good Earth Transit’s public bus route serves Thibodaux on weekdays and connects to nearby towns Schriever, Gray and Houma. The route stops outside Gouaux Hall at Nicholls State University, a mile away. Lafourche Parish’s public library and courthouse are right in the neighborhood, and the nearest hospital is Thibodaux Regional Health System, about 2 miles away.
