Revitalization in the center of “Chair City”
Downtown Thomasville isn’t just the geographic and historical heart of the city, it’s the cultural center, too. It's home to “The Big Chair,” a 30-foot replica of a Duncan Phyfe armchair, as well as the oldest railroad depot in North Carolina and a collection of local markets, shops and eateries. "Downtown Thomasville is a pretty small area, but it has everything you would want and more. There are a lot of small businesses that have brought some new excitement to the area," says Realtor Lynn Stewart of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Carolinas Realty. Jenny Brewer, a Keller Williams Realtor who grew up in Thomasville, agrees. “It really is a very charming small town. There’s a lot of rebuilding and restoration going on.” She adds that the revitalization is thanks in part to the “active historic preservation group,” local nonprofit PACE Downtown. “The city has also gotten the Main Street Grant, which is federal funding that’s awarded to restore storefronts back to their historical look and bring businesses into downtown,” says Stewart, referring to the Downtown Strong Initiative Grant from the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Main Street and Rural Economic Development Division awarded to the city in 2019. “There are a lot of nice little old-fashioned diners, locally owned places, landmarks, et cetera. It really is a cute, very charming downtown. What Thomasville’s doing to bring businesses downtown, they’re doing a good job of it.”

Recreation for the sporty, bookish and social butterflies
The Thomasville Central Rec Center hosts after-school and athletic programs. It also offers a kitchen, gymnasium and reservable activity room. Outside, there are three tennis/pickleball courts, a handball wall, a basketball court and a sunny, multiuse athletic field. Just a few blocks west down East Main Street, there’s another basketball court at Doak Park, alongside a skatepark and a fully fenced baseball diamond. The Thomasville Public Library is between the two parks, off Randolph Street. Brewer says that the nearby Thomasville Woman’s Club has been part of the recent wave of revitalization sweeping through the area. “It was kind of the hub of Thomasville when I was growing up but later fell into disrepair. It’s being restored now, and starting to be big again,” she says. The historic building has housed the Rotary Club, Lions Club and Woman’s Club since 1937.
