A close-knit community surrounded by growth
Erwin Heights overlooks the far north side of Thomasville. The area comprises three small communities: Erwin Heights proper, Wallcliff Park and Forest Hills. “They tend to be rolled into one neighborhood on the maps, but people that are from here consider them separate,” says Keller Williams Realtor Jenny Brewer, who grew up on Circle Drive in Wallcliff Park. She says the main distinguishing factor between them is the age of the homes. Erwin Heights popped up in the 1940s and ‘50s, Wallcliff Park followed in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and Forest Hills was built up a little later, in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Despite, or perhaps because of, their age, the neighborhoods are still very desirable. Brewer: “You actually know your neighbors. In a lot of the newer developments, you don’t know who lives next to you and you don’t really care. But here, you do.” Donna Hughes, a Realtor with Top Dog Realty, adds that the space accompanying these more established enclaves makes them even more desirable. “The Toyota battery plant that’s coming to the Guilford-Randolph County line is bringing a lot of people down here from all over the country, and with them a construction boom. There are so many new houses being built around Thomasville, Trinity and Archdale, but since the developments try to fit in as many homes as possible, each home has a small footprint. Anything with acreage, or a little legroom, like here, is selling really fast and well.”
Well-maintained midcentury homes
Brewer puts the range of home prices in Thomasville overall at $200,000 to about $625,000, but in this particular area, the range is $200,000 to $400,000. “There are a lot of brick ranch-styles, some split-levels, some traditional two-stories. They’re solid houses, and all three neighborhoods have maintained quite well,” she says. Hughes adds that one of her recent listings, built in 1951, sold for $370,000 and was so well-maintained that even the appraiser commented on it. “It was one of the most well-maintained homes of that age that I’ve ever seen, and the person that bought it had been looking since 2018, that’s how picky they were. The home and the neighborhood finally checked all their boxes.”
Thomasville schools
Neighborhood kids are served by the four-school district, Thomasville City Schools. Between Kindergarten and third grade, youngsters go to Thomasville Primary School, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. Fourth and fifth graders go to Liberty Drive Elementary, which earns a C. Older students attend Thomasville Middle and High Schools between sixth and 12th grade. The middle school earns a C grade from Niche, while the high school earns a C-plus. Both Thomasville Middle and High School are conveniently within half a mile of most Erwin Heights homes, near the corner of Unity Street and Bulldog Drive. Teens at Thomasville High can choose to take courses from Army JROTC to Spanish language. The school also offers a Career & Technical Education Career Pathway, in which students can take classes in carpentry, entrepreneurship, business, health science, culinary arts, manufacturing, sales and digital design/animation.
Local park and YMCA
The Tom A. Finch Community YMCA is near the heart of Erwin Heights, off Mendenhall Street and within half a mile of most homes. Veterans Memorial Park is not much farther, just a little over a mile southwest. There, Thomasville’s middle and high school Bulldogs football teams play games at Cushwa Stadium. There are also picnic shelters and a half basketball court. The adjacent Thomasville Aquatics and Community Center offers an outdoor swimming pool, complete with a water slide, as well as two playgrounds.
Everyday essentials nearby
Locals can shop for groceries close to home at the Food Lion off West Cooksey Drive, less than a mile and a half away. For fresh fish, Todd’s Seafood Market has been a community staple for more than 60 years. It’s even closer, off National Highway just half a mile south. “There’s a Pizza Hut and a Papa John’s, all the banks, a Tractor Supply and the Walmart down on Randolph Street. That’s where all the businesses are that make the town roll, so to speak,” says Hughes, adding that one of her favorite restaurants in Thomasville, Sixty Six Grill & Taphouse, is on Randolph just north of Interstate 85. Another of her personal favorites is Cross Ties Restaurant & Catering. “It’s on East Main Street in downtown, right over near the railroad tracks. They have really amazing food there, and so many unique dishes,” she says.
Close to main roads and bus service
Business Route 85, US Route 29 and Highway 70 East overlap each other half a mile north, connecting residents east to High Point and west to Lexington. Downtown Thomasville is just under 2 miles south down National Highway. Davidson County Transportation provides bus service throughout Thomasville. The Green Route, which is free for all riders, runs along Unity Street at Erwin Heights’ south end all the way down to the Walmart Supercenter at the south end of town, across Interstate 85. The 3.5-mile distance can take less than 10 minutes by car.
